Chiropractic: An Important Ingredient to Health and Wellness

The art and science of the practice of Chiropractic have been around for over 100 years and can be a valuable tool for the person seeking improvement in health and wellness. Chiro- is derived from the Greek word for hand and praktikos - meaning the practice of or practical. Generally speaking, Chiropractic focuses on finding small misalignments in the spine or vertebral column termed subluxations (luxation is a complete dislocation) and aligning the relationship of one vertebrae to the next one. These subluxations or misalignments in the spine is commonplace and can happen due to posture or chronic repetitive movements as well as acute pathology, injury and even pregnancy.

Chiropractic has over the last hundred years become mainstream moving from Eastern philosophy to becoming a part of Western medicine. Fundamentally, traditional Western medicine had treated the disease or pathology or symptom from the outside in with computer diagnostic equipment, medications and surgery. In contrast, Chiropractic is based on diagnosing the underlying cause of the disease or symptom with the premise that the central nervous system and related sympathetic and parasympathetic system controls all body functions and operates like a computer program. The nervous system is comprised of nerve pairings which are split to perform their respective functions. Each pairing is split into a sympathetic branch to the muscles for fight or flight instincts as well as a parasympathetic branch for rest and digestion functions.

With a general understanding of the history and philosophy of Chiropractic let us now look at how this discipline can be used to assist in the achievement of improving and maintaining health and wellness. Few if any of us are fortunate enough to get through this life without experiencing spine or extremity misalignments. These misalignments can come as early as the birthing process! Then from toddlers through school age adolescence it is rare to not be involved in accidents such as falls, sports accidents, car accidents, poor sleep and sitting postures. As we get old enough to work there becomes more opportunity for postural imbalances and work and auto accidents. Then as we age into hopefully better health habits we face new obstacles in the form of arthritis and generally decreased activity. The list of who can benefit from Chiropractic is a simple answer...everyone can to some extent. How much one can benefit and how often treatment is required depends on many factors including age and acuteness or age of condition.

Chiropractic is by nature not a treatment of conditions but rather an alignment of the body to heal itself by being able to function as efficiently as possible. With that being stated however, patients have increasingly chosen Chiropractic to improve and at times alleviate symptoms such as headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain as well as helping with arm and leg pain and numbness, disc problems and much more.

Most importantly Chiropractic should be considered as a resource in achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health and wellness. Chiropractic has become a leader in alternative medicine and natural healing. With much criticism by Western medicine and western model insurance companies, Chiropractic has had to prove its necessity through word of mouth for much of the past hundred years.

Starting with the champion San Francisco 49er's of the 1980's Chiropractic became introduced into the NFL with documented positive outcomes for the star players of the team. Many of the players were in fact documented attributing Chiropractic to helping prolong their careers. Today it is commonplace for all sporting teams from high school to professionals to have Chiropractic be a part of the healthcare team.

Health and wellness therefore requires a combination of considerations to achieving optimal function. Chiropractic can be used effectively to achieve and maintain efficiency as well as assist following any occupational or environmental stressors that create injury, postural or nerve imbalances. Remember, do all you can to achieve health and wellness...the quantity and quality of your life depends on it. Best wishes.

Chiropractic Services and How They Help Remedy Back Pain

Over the past years, chiropractic has emerged as one of the most commonly utilized health care techniques, and its field has been more widely recognized by medical organizations, particularly in the United States and Canada, as well as in Australia. Despite the many debates on whether chiropractic should be classified as a legitimate medical discipline or a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), it is seen to be most effective in treating and managing back pain.

Overview of Chiropractic

The principle of chiropractic is anchored on the belief that a person's overall health condition is heavily dependent on his musculoskeletal structure. Thus, if his spine is properly aligned, a person will less likely experience headaches, neck and back pains, and other conditions associated with his musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors, then, advocate the use of noninvasive and nonsurgical techniques in dealing with said conditions. Instead of resorting to expensive, and sometimes traumatic, medical "under-the-knife" procedures, chiropractors employ manual and hands-on adjustment and manipulation of the spine, as well as certain joints and soft tissues to diagnose, treat and prevent musculoskeletal-related conditions. Because of this approach, chiropractic is often mistaken for physical therapy and even for general massage services.

It should be noted that chiropractors must first undergo a formal and professional degree and training in chiropractic before being able to provide services to patients. Some areas even require chiropractors to secure a license from the government. While they are authorized to adopt manual techniques, however, they are not allowed to prescribe medicines to their patients. Instead, they can only refer their patients to medical specialists such as an orthopedic or a sports medicine doctor.

Chiropractic Services

A typical chiropractic clinic or center offers services that care for patients experiencing pain or discomfort in musculoskeletal regions, namely, the back, neck, head, arms and legs. While chiropractors focus more on treating said conditions, they also diagnose the cause of the pain and recommend a short-, medium-, or long-term program to address the same, depending on the nature and gravity of the patient's condition. Some chiropractors also offer on-site or home services for patients who can no longer travel to their clinic. Still, other chiropractors set up a free consultation hotline where they respond to chiropractic-related queries from individuals.

Management of Back Pain

Among the many conditions that chiropractors are able to manage, back pain seems to be the most common complaint of their patients. The question now is: How do chiropractors effectively treat back pain?

First, the chiropractor administers a detailed physical examination of the patient and takes into account his previous medical conditions, ailments or operations. After getting a clear and holistic picture of the patient's need, the chiropractor then maps out a treatment plan, which can either be a manual manipulation of the spine or of the muscles, or a combination of both. Spinal manipulation aims to enhance the structure and function of the spine and nerve systems, while chiropractic mobilization targets muscles and joints to improve movability and the motion capacity of the body. To ensure that all factors that may be contributors to back pain are eliminated or mitigated, chiropractors likewise give nutritional advice, and if necessary, recommend an exercise or rehabilitation program.

Since chiropractors do a hands-on technique, their manipulation is said to be more direct and zeroed in on the problem area. It is for this reason that chiropractors' services are often more cost-effective and sometimes even faster-acting than drugs, pain relievers and pain killers, or any other traditional medical procedure.

Maximizing Your Health - The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

The continued rise in the usage of chiropractic care has been ongoing. Studies continue to demonstrate the numbers rising and the increase of people using chiropractic health care. In one issue of American Journal of Public Health, a study was published entitled "Use of Chiropractic Services from 1895 through 1991 in the United States and Canada". The conclusion of this study was that the number of visits to chiropractors has more than doubled in the past 20 years. Many recommend this particular treatment method due to the non-invasive approach and its insistence on awakening the body's natural ability to heal and become healthier, stronger and more resilient.

The Healing Benefits Of Chiropractic

Most people in their everyday lives have things happen that affect their bodies. Dysfunction in their musculoskeletal system can benefit from chiropractic care. From pain relief, injury rehabilitation, optimal athletic performance, aging, and improved immune function. These are all some the benefits a person may undergo when they have misaligned spine, back, or neck. For people who need to be physically active for their work, sport and daily responsibilities, the presence of such dysfunction disables them from performing well. This is due to the fact that any form of movement on the traumatized area of the body can result in stress and possibly more damage causing more pain and discomfort.

Regardless of the cause of your initial pain and problems, among the many benefits research shows you may enjoy as a result of chiropractic care are as follows:

• better movement and improved circulation

• lower levels of lactic acid

• higher oxygenation and better nutrient delivery to cells

• increased flexibility

• improved comfort and decrease or elimination of pain

• Faster recovery time

• Reduced muscle spasm

• Prevention of future injury and improved immune function

• More relaxed feeling

The Overall Approach

If you want to enhance the benefits of chiropractic care, it is best to combine your efforts with an overall approach to your health and well being. Health is not merely the absence of pain and symptoms. If you have ever had a cavity, you know that by the time the pain shows up, the damage to your tooth is already there. The healthier you are, and the healthier you become the greater the potential benefits of your chiropractic care. Minimize dis-ease and maximize your health. The relief from any pressure or source of discomfort and irritation will allow your body to attain maximum mobility and better performance.

Some general recommendations to develop a routine and get the maximum health benefits are the following:

• Keep your body properly hydrated.

• Follow a healthy nutritional plan, including lots of raw organic foods and leafy greens.

• Do some stretching exercises or develop a healthy exercise routine.

· Maximise your oxygen intake through some forms of aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Additional Benefits of Chiropractic Care

There is still a small percentage of the population who have misconceptions about the benefits of chiropractic care. However, research continues to be done, changing these perceptions and gradually more of the scientific community are showing greater interest in the healing potential that chiropractic may represent. One of the misconceptions being that it is not a valid form of treatment and is used only for mild cases of back pain, headaches, and the like. However, chiropractic adjustments are being researched to investigate the benefits even to those suffering from extreme cases of spinal or vertebral misalignment and other health problems.

Many chiropractors have patients who have benefited beyond musculoskeletal problems, these include:

• women may have improved comfort during pregnancy and labor

• minimize the risk of scoliosis in an infant and improve their postural development.

• Improved immune function and resilience possibly preventing asthma, ear infection, bedwetting, among other things.

• more energy, productivity and physical stamina in adults

• For senior individuals, they attain better balance, improved sleeping and prevent injury from falls.

Some of the results and benefits reported from patients who have undergone chiropractic care include the following:

• Improved immune and nervous system function

• greater vitality

• improved breathing and exercising

• improved digestion and bowel function

• improved vision

• Improved overall health.

Study and research continue as we look at the cause of health and the benefits of chiropractic care!

Following chiropractic adjustments, your body may start to improve movement and alignment of the spine and spinal structures. In many cases, a patient will immediately experience relief for a problem soon after undergoing chiropractic care. Restoring and building health from the inside is one of the advantages of opting for chiropractic care over surgical or medical procedures that often require a long recovery period. In other cases, if the damage or misalignment is more severe, a person may be sore and still achy aftercare. Some people may take longer to heal and demonstrate improvement, they may also need to make other lifestyle improvements to maximize their health and wellbeing along with improved pain-free movement.

If you approach your health from the perspective of a way of life, and give your body and mind the essentials for maximizing your health, chiropractic care may be a key ingredient.

Benefits Of Chiropractic: How It Helps You

Chiropractic care is becoming more and more popular in America and for a number of reasons. Whether you decide to get treated for a particular problem or you just want to improve your overall health, this form of treatment can help you in a number of ways.

Fall Ill Less Often

While measuring over 100 individuals who had been given regular chiropractic care, it was found that, on an average, they had a 200% stronger immune system than those who do not get chiropractic treatment. A better immune system means fewer colds and less missing out on work.

Aim to Stay Healthy

Don't you feel good when you know that someone is continuously striving to make you feel healthy all the time? These doctors get a lot of training in various areas like anatomy, nutrition, rehabilitation, and physiology. Some of them may even have focused on these subjects more than regular doctors. With this knowledge and experience, they aim to keep you in good health.

Minimize the Drugs and Hospital Visits

This form of care has been seen to reduce drugs and hospital costs by over 50%. This is a huge reduction in the average amount of money that a person has to spend when they visit the emergency room or buy medicine to get rid of a problem.

Save Your Money

As mentioned in the above point, chiropractic treatment could help you save a lot of money. Chiropractors usually work out to be a lot more cost effective than going to a doctor and being prescribed some expensive medicine. If your backache can be taken care of without pumping drugs into your system, you will save money and allow your body to heal in the most natural way possible.

Get Better Sleep

This treatment has been seen to improve the sleeping patterns of children as well as adults. Many people around the country suffer from a chronic sleeping disorder that can affect their entire life if not addressed. This problem can be reduced through chiropractic care.

Have Better Moods

Even though it may sound unusual that a spinal adjustment technique can change your mood, studies have found that this form of treatment can, in fact, make you happier. By decreasing the amount of cortisol in the body and raising the level of good hormones, many patients experience a better balance of hormones in their body and it can result in an overall improvement of mood. This is why chiropractic care is often suggested for people suffering from depression or anxiety.

More Relief from Pain

Chiropractic adjustments can often help to relieve pain in the body. Pain often occurs when the spine has been misaligned, either because of some condition or due to an accident. When this happens, it can cause a lot of discomforts. A chiropractor will help to adjust the spine and reduce the pain.

How Can Chiropractors Benefit Your Health?

Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness.

Effectiveness

The research about chiropractic care is growing. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent studies show that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, along with exercise, relieve neck pain more effectively than medication.

Furthermore, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that an integrated approach to health care -- including chiropractic care -- results in a 51.8 percent reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43 percent fewer hospital admissions.

You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.

Back and neck pain

Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine.

Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: "They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems."

Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released.

By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pressure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body. Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health.

Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won't function as well as if they were straight. "Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability," he said, "allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability."

Treatment plan

Many chiropractors seek to care for the whole person, from general wellness to disease prevention. They examine every patient, not only for the reason of their visit but also their level of health. After diagnosis, a chiropractor develops a treatment plan.

Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, "This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems."

Some chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise recommendations, ergonomic and lifestyle counseling and so on. The successful management of chronic conditions may require a combination of these major components. This holistic approach can reduce the need for potentially addictive pain medication or invasive surgery.

Modern Chiropractors and Typical Misconceptions About Chiropractic Care

A lot of people continue to be frightened of trying alternative treatments, especially chiropractic care, due to myths and misconceptions. Here are a few basic misconceptions you may have heard about chiropractic care:

Misconception 1: Chiropractic Care is Agonizing

Chiropractic care is by and large pain-free. Many patients instantly feel relieved and also relaxed following treatment procedures. Others even describe the procedure and experience as being much like a good therapeutic massage. Individuals who have always been affected by neck pain and back pain can experience a bit of discomfort, however, their sessions end up being much more relaxing and comfortable with time.

Nearly all adult people will enjoy chiropractic therapies. Chiropractic therapy for youngsters as well as babies is likewise usually pain-free, despite the fact that kids may feel trepidation and fright in the beginning.

A session might range from thirty to sixty minutes, dependent upon the disorder being dealt with and also the affected regions. Patients can experience discomfort or perhaps slight pain depends upon the seriousness of the problem, in addition to their own personal threshold regarding pain.

Misconception 2: Chiropractic Care Can Be Dangerous

Chiropractic care is extremely safe. Chiropractic corrections are believed to be amongst the safest treatments regarding neck and back pain. The danger regarding having serious complications as a result of spinal manipulation is, in fact, unheard of. Spinal adjustment is actually recommended by nearly all physicians before people are generally advised to have surgical procedures. The alternative treatment is likewise viewed as a preliminary choice before you take powerful prescription drugs such as steroids or antidepressants.

Misconception 3: Chiropractic Doctors Are Less Competent In comparison to Medical Doctors

Chiropractic doctors actually undergo extremely stringent and demanding training and education. These kinds of courses are much like those undertaken by medical doctors, apart from subject matter such as surgical procedures and pharmacology. Chiropractic doctors have to study for two to four years initially as an undergraduate, prior to completing four to five years of academic studies in a chiropractic college.

The certified professionals are therefore well-equipped in things like pathology, radiology, biomechanics, differential diagnosis, physiology, chiropractic correction techniques, along with other health issues. Additionally, there are State and also National Board Examinations to guarantee certification. Ongoing training is necessary for all chiropractors as well.

Misconception 4: Chiropractic Care is Expensive

Chiropractic care is actually deemed to be both efficient and also cost-effective. Chiropractic care is usually significantly less expensive in comparison to having major medical treatments such as surgery and going on long-term prescription drug plans. Chiropractic care patients found that they may have substantially reduced costs regarding inpatient appointments, healthcare programs, and medicines.

Evaluation consultations are usually quick and inexpensive. Individuals might only have to see their chiropractors a couple of times each year, dependent upon the progress regarding the problem. When patients have successfully completed a therapy program, they are given a choice to carry on receiving treatment or to opt for occasional sessions.

Preventive plans are also offered in order to help individuals eliminate back, spine and throat troubles before significant interventions are needed.

Purpose of a Chiropractic Adjustment

This may seem like a self-evident topic. Well, it's not. The Chiropractic profession cannot even agree on the purpose of an adjustment. There is the fundamental, basic purpose that has been around since 1895 (the inception of Chiropractic) which has not changed, deviated or strayed from its first day. Then there are the fads, the misconceptions, and the attempts to fit nicely into the Medical model.

The most common misconception is that a Chiropractic adjustment is solely for the elimination of symptoms; such as neck pain, back pain, headaches, etc... Although Chiropractic is highly effective at helping to relieve these symptoms, this misconception usually stems from the fact that much of the population does not understand the Nervous System. They believe that nerves only carry messages of pain to the brain. That is obviously not the case. If it was, then there would have to be something other than the brain controlling all of your organs and chemical reactions going on within the body. Simply not so!

The second misconception was perpetuated by early Chiropractors themselves. They actually believed that a Chiropractic adjustment was the cure-all for all diseases. This was in part due to the overwhelming number of "conditions" that seemed to get better under Chiropractic care; and in part due to the frustration directed towards much of the Medical community and their treatment of symptoms, neglecting the "entire person" in many cases. This is obviously just as wrong as the belief that Chiropractic is only for neck and back pain because many times other things are needed as well to get sick people well. Such as proper nutrition, exercise, rest, and even Medical intervention. Other times, however, a person may have been "sick" for too long for even the body's inborn healing ability to overcome the damage done by years of disease or neglect. Or even for medicine to undo the damage. (i.e.. terminal cancer, people that have had multiple heart attacks, etc).

So what is an adjustment for? Well, when you remove all of the misconceptions and the fads, you are left with one simple fact. A bone in your spine out of place (Vertebral Subluxation), will always have a detrimental effect somewhere in the body due to interference in the Nervous System. This is because structure ALWAYS affects function. Example: If you change the structure of a boat in the water by putting one oar in, the boat will go around in circles. If you put a spoiler on a car, it makes the car more aerodynamic. If you tie a string around your aorta (the largest artery in your body), blood flow will lessen or stop completely. Structure always changes function. If a vertebral bone is out of place - then it will restrict the communication between the brain and some distant part of the body. ALWAYS! If you remove the interference by removing the bone (vertebrae) from the nerve or spinal cord (this is a Chiropractic adjustment), you once again change the function - in this case improving it. The body's inborn intelligence is once again allowed to control and coordinate all bodily functions so that the body can adapt itself to the external and internal environments; survive and prosper.

It comes down to one simple fact; the body will ALWAYS function better without a vertebral subluxation than with a vertebral subluxation. That goes for any and every person with a spine and a Nervous System. Everyone knows that if you do not brush your teeth and get them checked regularly your chances of good oral hygiene are not good. What is more important - your teeth or your spine? When was the last time you had your spine checked?

Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic

Q: What conditions do chiropractors treat?
A: Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches...particularly with their highly skilled manipulations or chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments, and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues, as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. DCs also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

Q: How do I select a doctor of chiropractic?
A: One of the best ways to locate a doctor of chiropractic (DC) near you by using Find a Doctor. You can also select a DC is by getting a referral from a friend, family member, colleague, or another health care provider.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment safe?
A: Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints. Although chiropractic has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness, stiffness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current research shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Neck pain and some types of headaches are treated through precise cervical manipulation. Cervical manipulation, often called a neck adjustment, works to improve joint mobility in the neck, restoring range of motion and reducing muscle spasm, which helps relieve pressure and tension. Neck manipulation, when performed by a skilled and well-educated professional such as a doctor of chiropractic, is a remarkably safe procedure.

Some reports have associated high-velocity upper neck manipulation with a certain rare kind of stroke, or vertebral artery dissection. However, evidence suggests that this type of arterial injury often takes place spontaneously in patients who have pre-existing arterial disease. These dissections have been associated with everyday activities such as turning the head while driving, swimming, or having a shampoo in a hair salon. Patients with this condition may experience neck pain and headache that leads them to seek professional care—often at the office of a doctor of chiropractic or family physician—but that care is not the cause of the injury. The best evidence indicates that the incidence of artery injuries associated with high-velocity upper neck manipulation is extremely rare—about one to three cases in 100,000 patients who get treated with a course of care. This is similar to the incidence of this type of stroke among the general population.

If you are visiting your doctor of chiropractic with upper-neck pain or a headache, be very specific about your symptoms. This will help your doctor of chiropractic offer the safest and most effective treatment, even if it involves referral to another health care provider.

When discussing the risks of any health care procedure, it is important to look at that risk in comparison to other treatments available for the same condition. In this regard, the risks of serious complications from spinal manipulation for conditions such as neck pain and headache compare very favorably with even the most conservative care options. For example, the risks associated with some of the most common treatments for musculoskeletal pain—over-the-counter or prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and prescription painkillers—are significantly greater than those of chiropractic manipulation.

According to the American Journal of Gastroenterology, people taking NSAIDS are three times more likely than those who do not to develop serious adverse gastrointestinal problems such as hemorrhage (bleeding) and perforation. That risk rises to more than five times among people age 60 and older.

Moreover, the number of prescriptions for powerful drugs such as oxycodone and hydrocodone have tripled in the past 12 years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that abuse of these commonly prescribed painkillers is among the leading causes of accidental death in the United States. Overdoses of opioid painkillers are responsible for some 15,000 deaths per year; that’s more than the number of deaths from cocaine and heroin combined. Doctors of chiropractic are well-trained professionals who provide patients with safe, effective care for a variety of common conditions. Their extensive education has prepared them to identify patients who have special risk factors and to get those patients the most appropriate care, even if that requires referral to a medical specialist.

Q: Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from an MD?
A: A referral is usually not needed to see a doctor of chiropractic (DC); however, your health plan may have specific referral requirements. You may want to contact your employer’s human resources department—or the insurance plan directly—to find out if there are any referral requirements. Most plans allow you to just call and schedule an appointment with a DC.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?
A: Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

Q: Are chiropractors allowed to practice in hospitals or use medical outpatient facilities?
A: Chiropractors are being recognized to admit and treat patients in hospitals and to use outpatient clinical facilities (such as labs, x-rays, etc.) for their non-hospitalized patients. Hospital privileges were first granted in 1983.

Q: Do insurance plans cover chiropractic?
A: Yes. Chiropractic care is included in most health insurance plans, including major medical plans, workers’ compensation, Medicare, some Medicaid plans, and Blue Cross Blue Shield plans for federal employees, among others. Chiropractic care is also available to active-duty members of the armed forces at more than 60 military bases and is available to veterans at more than 60 major veterans medical facilities.

Q: What type of education and training do chiropractors have?
A: Doctors of chiropractic are educated as primary-contact health care providers, with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the musculoskeletal system (the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the spine and extremities) and the nerves that supply them. Educational requirements for doctors of chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions. The typical applicant for chiropractic college has already acquired nearly four years of pre-medical undergraduate college education, including courses in biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, psychology, and related lab work. Once accepted into an accredited chiropractic college, the requirements become even more demanding — four to five academic years of professional study are the standard. Doctors of chiropractic are educated in orthopedics, neurology, physiology, human anatomy, clinical diagnosis including laboratory procedures, diagnostic imaging, exercise, nutrition rehabilitation and more. Because chiropractic care includes highly skilled manipulation/adjusting techniques, a significant portion of time is spent in clinical technique training to master these important manipulative procedures. In total, the chiropractic college curriculum includes a minimum of 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. The course of study is approved by the Council on Chiropractic Education, an accrediting agency that is fully recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Q: How is a chiropractic adjustment performed?
A: Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during the doctor of chiropractic’s intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractic physician typically uses his or her hands--or an instrument--to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, in order to restore or enhance joint function. This often helps resolve joint inflammation and reduces the patient's pain. Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Q: Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?
A: The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary. Your doctor of chiropractic should tell you the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last.

Q: Why is there a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?
A: Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

9 Reasons You Should Consider Seeing A Chiropractor

If you’re suffering from back pain or any other form of chronic pain you may have considered going to see a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care is a popular treatment in the US with Doctors of Chiropractic treating over 27 million Americans annually. But seeing a chiropractor isn’t just for back pain, there are many other ways it can help.

Here we’ve compiled the 9 reasons you should consider seeing a chiropractor, but there are certainly many more!

1) Treating the Cause

The essence of chiropractic care is that treatment focusses on the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.

Compared to prescribed medications in a recent study, it was in fact found that 56% of patients who saw a doctor, saw a 30% reduction in low back pain after 4 weeks. But 94% of patients who underwent Chiropractic treatment saw a 30% reduction in low back pain after 4 weeks.

Vertigo for example is a condition that is found to be much more effectively treated with chiropractic care, as rather than simply dealing with the symptoms of the condition, the Chiropractor will move you in to specific positions to reestablish the balance within the ear.

Chiropractic treatment for vertigo is believed to be very effective, with a recent piece of research finding that after 3-4 treatments, 80% of patients were symptom free!

2) Improve Sleep

A National Sleep Foundation poll found that 60% of American adults experience sleep problems at some time. In fact, according to the APTA Move Forward survey, 37% of adults said that LBP affects their sleep, with over half stating that they suffer from poor sleep quality.

Chiropractic treatment and the manipulation therapies used are believed to help to improve blood flow in patients, which is essential for great sleep.

Chiropractors also focus on correcting misalignments or subluxations in the spine. These subluxations lead to a process called stress response which puts the body out of balance and does not let the body rest.

A well trained chiropractor will adjust these subluxations with safe and careful techniques to get your body to function normally.

3) Assists with Chronic Pain

In a first session with a patient with chronic pain, a chiropractor will aim to get to the root of the problem, working out where inflammation and muscle tension may be occurring and building an effective treatment plan.

It is this approach that causes so many to turn to a chiropractor for help with chronic pain. For those with long term conditions, a study has shown that chiropractic care is more effective in treating pain intensity than pain clinics, which only focus on the symptoms of the pain.

A chiropractor may also employ other complimentary procedures such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), TENS therapy and other techniques to complement their spinal adjustment treatment.

4) Boost Your Immune System

There is evidence to support the theory that chiropractic treatment can boost the immune system, as the nervous system and immune system are so interlinked, it’s believed if you tweak one then you tweak the other!

It’s not a new concept either, as it’s believed that chiropractic treatment was used during the Influenza Epidemic in 1912.

In fact, a series of studies published by the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed that several types of immune system cells, showed increased biological activity after chiropractic adjustment.

5) Avoid Medication

Many people choose to see a chiropractor as an alternative to taking pain relief medication, and the inevitable side effects than can occur.

Instead of treating the symptoms like pain relief medication does, a chiropractor aims to get to the root of the problem, to help you better manage your condition, putting together a treatment plan to help you get back on track.

A study by Annals of Internal Medicine in to the best option for treating neck pain, found that after following 272 neck pain patients for 12 weeks, those who used a chiropractor or exercise were more than twice as likely to be pain free compared to those who took medication.

6) Help with Migraines / Headaches

It is reported that 9 out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches, though varying in intensity, headaches and migraines can really affect your quality of life.

Both in the treatment of headaches and in the treatment of migraines, chiropractic care has proven to be an effective treatment, with spinal manipulation being the technique which is most commonly used.

In fact, a study by JMPT in 2011, found that chiropractic care improves both migraines and headaches, when treated with spinal manipulation techniques.

7) Pregnancy and Fertility

Throughout pregnancy a woman’s body goes through many changes, which can led to LBP and pain in the pelvis.

At a time when pain medication options are limited, chiropractic care has been proven to not only provide care for lower back pain, but also in a 2002 study an 82% success rate was reported when chiropractic treatment was used to turn breech babies.

There are also links with improvements in fertility with those struggling to conceive opting for chiropractic care as an alternative to other treatments.

8) Improves Sports Performance

Chiropractors are widely used within professional sport – before, during and after a sports performance.

In fact, Doctors of Chiropractic are used by all 32 National Football League teams to deal with ongoing back and neck problems, as well as overall conditioning of the players.

They focus on all aspects of the body and are used across all sports within the US Olympic and Paralympic teams, to improve performance. Within baseball, studies have shown that chiropractic care helps prevent hamstring and other lower limb injuries.

Another study revealed that muscle strength and long jump distances were greatly improved in baseball players who received regularly chiropractic adjustments.

9) Reduce Doctor and Hospital Visits

When you see the impact on the different conditions above, it makes sense that chiropractic care can help you reduce your number of doctor and hospital visits, as well as reduce pharmaceutical costs in the long run.

In the US, two to five percent of all doctor visits are for pain in the back, although this is a small percentage, it equals to around $84 billion in healthcare costs.

Using a Doctor of Chiropractic as your primary care provider was found to, in a study published by the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, result in a 43% decrease in hospital admission, 52% reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43% fewer outpatient surgeries and procedures.

Chiropractic Treatment Is Suitable For The Elderly

Chiropractic care focus on the connection between the musculoskeletal structure and the body functions with special regards to the spinal area. Our nervous system is responsible for controlling the functions of other organs, muscles, and body systems. The nerves and the nerve roots are connected from the brain into a vast muscular bundle widely known as the spinal nerve. It travels along the spine and branches out in the spinal vertebrae. These vertebrae connect the various body parts and organs towards the spine. Any condition that pinches the nerves, such as trauma, pressure, or spinal misalignments, can cause disruption of the function of the nervous system.

It is not surprising that as we get older, our body functions begin to deteriorate. Our muscles respond slower and shrink. Our body has less than the body requirement for fluids. Our bones lose density and become more brittle. The elderly are much more prone to musculoskeletal injuries. When they get injured, they take a longer recovery period. If they seek medical treatment, their age can mean they become more sensitive to the side effects of medications and surgery puts them at far more risk.

Given this set of conditions, medication-free and noninvasive chiropractic treatment is preferably suited to older people. In working with the elderly, DCs make use of gentle techniques appropriate to the aging body. Ongoing wellness and preventive care are essential elements of treatment. This may include recommendations on exercise, nutrition and lifestyle modifications.

At present, chiropractic care is the third largest health care system that provides a safe and effective treatment for pain due to spinal misalignments. Since many health problems are linked with irregularities in the spine, chiropractic is very efficient in dealing with these various conditions. Chiropractors are specially trained to identify and treat subluxations. According to them, these subluxations cause unfavorable disturbances with your nervous system. Anti-inflammatory medication regimen and other pain relievers only mask the symptoms, may cause unwanted side effects, and do not deal with the real cause of the problem. Chiropractic care provides a drug-free, pain-free, and safe treatment that takes care of the root of the problem.

Do you know that musculoskeletal injuries due to falling are very common among our elderly? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for about 90% of the 850,000 bone fractures which happen every year among Americans past the age of 65. DCs can reduce the incidence of falling by using chiropractic adjustments to stabilize the mechanoreceptors located on the cervical spine. Additionally, they will provide instructions on how to do stretching and exercise to increase overall flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination, and strength.

Chiropractic adjustments for the elderly can enhance the range of motion of the spine and extremities. For the elderly, this would allow them to bend and lift up their young grandchildren. They can also do much more activities without experiencing any pain. It can absolutely enhance their daily functions. Oftentimes, an increased range of motion is immediately observed after a few sessions of chiropractic rehabilitation.

Our bodies are designed to function and move. It allows us to do various activities and go to different places. As we get older, all those movable body parts eventually wear down. For this reason, it is important for the elderly to have their spine aligned properly. Chiropractors, such as professionals from Chiropractic Colorado Springs, normalize the alignment of the spine and reduce any strain on it to decrease spinal deterioration and other aches and pains.

Chiropractic therapy can help lessen pain, improve joint function, enhance mobility, increase balance and coordination, and decrease stiffness. Although it's not truly a fountain of youth, chiropractic can do wonders in improving your comfort and quality of life.

What Do Spinal Adjustments Feel Like? | Chiropractic Care

Adjustments can feel different, depending on the particular technique. Traditional chiropractic adjustments involve a very precise controlled impulse into the spine to restore range of motion. It will also decrease inflammation, relax muscles, and restore normal nerve function.

Most adjustments are not painful at all. And this is quite remarkable, considering the fact that we're adjusting areas that might be tender to begin with. The adjustments are very, very specific, and there's a very small movement that's done. And patients reported almost an immediate sense of relief after the adjustment. They usually report a profound sense of well being, they have increased range of motion, decreased tenderness, relaxation of the muscles, and decreased inflammation.

Each time we adjust, we restore slightly more range of motion to that vertebral segment. So that the sessions actually can improve your range of motion, and your spinal function over time.

The adjustments themselves are usually performed on a chiropractic table. And you'll be comfortably lying either face down on the table, or lying on your back face up. Occasionally adjustments are done in a sitting position.

I want to add that there are many different chiropractic techniques, and your chiropractor will choose the techniques that are right for your condition and your body type. Some of the techniques chiropractors may choose are a low force, or non forced techniques. In these cases, you may feel a gentle pressure, a stretching sensation, or a rocking sensation. These techniques are also very effective at reducing subluxation, restoring range of motion, and reducing pain and inflammation.

How Chiropractic Care Benefits Your Nervous System

To understand the benefits that regular chiropractic care has on your nervous system, you must first have a handle on the basic functioning of how your nervous system works.

The basic functioning of your nervous system depends on billions of tiny cells called neurons.

There are billions of them in the brain and each has a specific job.

This makes the brain like a supercomputer that controls the rest of the body's functions.

However, it does no good to have this awesome brain if it can't send and receive messages from the rest of the body. This is where your spine and nerves come into play.

They connect the brain with the body so it can get messages to the body to tell it what to do and how to function while also receive messages from the body letting it know how it's going down there.

If you touch a hot stove, it is a message carried by nerves in your finger to the spinal cord and brain that lets them know you just touched a something hot. The brain and spinal cord send a message back telling your arm muscles to contract or tighten up so that it will pull your hand away.

Now this happens fast!

Messages that travel via nerves are moving at speeds faster than 200 miles per hour.

3 Different Nerve Types

Not all nerves are just sensing pain and telling you to pull your hand away from a hot stove. As a matter of fact, only about 15% are 'pain nerves.'

There are also nerves that plug into muscles and tell them when to tighten up along with how fast and hard to contract. This allows you to sit, stand, walk, run and even blink!

There are still different nerves that have an indirect but still important impact on your organs as an integral part of telling them what to do as well as sending messages back letting your central computer system (brain and spinal cord) know how it's going.

How Chiropractic Care Affects the Nerves

Sometimes the nerves that branch off the spinal cord can become compressed or compromised in some way because of slight losses in proper alignment and motion of one or more spinal bones.

When this occurs, it is called a Subluxation (Sub-lux-a-tion).

If the nerve getting compressed or irritated transmits pain signals in the body, then you will likely experience pain.

If, however, the nerve that is getting compressed or compromised plugs into muscles, you may experience weakness in the muscles.

And, of course, if the nerve getting affected has an influence on any number of the various non-vital organs in the body then you could have issues related to your 'automated' organ function and not even realize that is the problem. You could be taking medications to control the symptoms associated with the effects of the organ not functioning correctly and never even realize the actual cause of your problem is not the organ itself but the fact that it is not receiving proper nerve signals input and thus over time stops functioning optimally.

The reality is that you could have subluxations negatively impacting your nerves and body and never even realize it simply because there is no identifiable 'pain' associated with it.

With a simple, safe and effective chiropractic adjustment you are not only restoring proper motion in spinal joints but also restoring the proper flow of nerve impulses.

10 Benefits of Getting a Chiropractic Adjustment

Are you experiencing frequent negative health symptoms like back pain, headaches, or stress? Pain medications can only do so much, and they won’t fix your problem.

Visiting a chiropractor may be able to help you overcome some or all of your symptoms. A chiropractic adjustment refers to a chiropractor physically adjusting the vertebrae in your back. This type of procedure can have a myriad of positive benefits without the stress or invasiveness of surgery or other more intense techniques.

Is a chiropractic adjustment right for you? To help you answer that, we are going to take you through some of the top benefits of getting a chiropractic adjustment.

1. Blood Pressure
A study published in the Human Journal of Hypertension showed that a chiropractic adjustment could give people suffering from high blood pressure the same effect as taking certain high blood pressure medications.

This study also showed that the effects of the adjustment would persist for 6 months after the adjustment.

High blood pressure medications can have negative side effects including:

Fatigue

Nausea

Dizziness

Anxiety

Weight loss

If an adjustment can give similar, if not the same, effect as these types of medications, it might be something to consider.

Adjustments have been shown to help patients suffering from low blood pressure as well.

2. A Chiropractic Adjustment Can Help With Neck and Lower Back Pain
This benefit is probably the most well known when it comes to going to the chiropractor. 80% of all Americans experience some sort of lower back pain in their lifetime.

Medications and surgeries are options for this type of pain, but those can be dangerous, expensive, and ineffective.

An adjustment from chiropractor services can significantly reduce your back and neck pain via a non-invasive technique. Chiropractic treatment is also cheaper than other methods of back pain management.

You’ll be able to save yourself from both mild and chronic pain while also reducing your medical costs.

3. Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition where there is an abnormal curvature of the spine. This can cause pain, abnormal posture, a reduction in your range of motion, and even trouble breathing.

Most scoliosis patients have few options for treatment. But a chiropractic adjustment has been shown to help treat scoliosis patients.

Chiropractic treatment combined with physical therapy could help treat and prevent the progression of scoliosis. The effectiveness of this treatment option varies from patient to patient, but it is a viable option.

4. Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates from your lower back down your legs because of a damaged or pressured sciatic nerve.

This type of chronic pain can lead to over-medicating and chronic pain. Chiropractic treatment can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve that is causing your sciatica. Studies show that patients receiving adjustments reduced the number of pain days they had. They also experienced a reduction in the severity of their pain.

5. Reduce Inflammation
Inflammation is one of the top causes of pain, joint issues, and tension. Chronic inflammation has been linked to a number of diseases like heart disease, chronic pain, and cancer.

Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to reduce inflammation, which can lead to a number of positive benefits, including:

Chronic lower back pain relief

Reduced muscle tension

Relief of joint pain

Reduced inflammation can also help reduce your risk of developing diseases that are linked to high inflammation.

6. Headache Relief
Both tension and migraine headaches can be caused by back pain and spinal issues. Back misalignment can cause muscle tension and pain which can result in both tension headaches as well as migraine headaches.

Besides back pain, headache is the top ailment that chiropractors treat. There are over 200 studies examining the benefits and effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments for headache relief.

7. Improvement in Symptoms of Neurological Conditions
Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to help increase blood flow to the brain. They can help increase the flow of cerebral spinal fluid as well. This can significantly help people suffering from neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.

While this subject is still being researched, the potential therapeutic applications provide exciting possibilities of treatment for these patients.

8. Children’s Health Benefits
Kids chiropractic care can significantly improve certain conditions that affect children. The big three conditions that can be helped with an adjustment in children are colic, acid reflux, and ear infections.

Colic
Colic causes near constant crying and fussiness in young children and babies as a result of abdominal discomfort and gas. Colic can be extremely difficult to treat, which can result in an uncomfortable baby and exhausted parents.

Adjustments have been shown to help improve infantile colic symptoms.

Acid Reflux and Ear Infections
It’s thought that the nerves in the brain and back along with the nerves in the gut and head are particularly sensitive. When these are affected, it can result in conditions like acid reflux and ear infections.

A chiropractic adjustment can help to improve what’s known as the gut-brain connection, which is why chiropractic adjustments might help these types of conditions.

This improvement can also boost the immune system, which can help prevent infection.

9. Improved Athletic Performance
Reduction of inflammation, pain, and other similar conditions can help get the body in top shape. This is especially true for athletes who depend on their body to do their job.

Many sports teams and professional athletes hire chiropractors. Adjustments can reduce pain and tension caused by sports and activity. Alignments can also reduce inflammation and boost the immune system to help boost an athletes performance.

10. Vertigo
Dizziness and vertigo can make it impossible to do everyday tasks or even get up out of bed without feeling disoriented and nauseous. This is a common condition after experiencing a head or neck injury.

A chiropractic adjustment can help target joints and vertebrae that aren’t moving correctly. This could help reduce vertigo episodes. An adjustment can also help fix your body’s natural balance, which can also cause vertigo if it’s misaligned.

Wrapping Up
Getting a chiropractic treatment can be a great way to improve multiple areas of your health with one non-invasive treatment. Surgeries and medications can be dangerous and expensive.

With an adjustment, you could safely and easily target your problems.

A Quick Look at Chiropractic Sports Medicine

The whole idea of healing the body without relying on surgery or medicine is quite practical and worth considering. One of the most used forms of treatment today is chiropractic. Sadly, most people believe that chiropractic care is limited to the treatment of back and neck pain. In this post, we will explain the benefits of chiropractic sports medicine.

What's Chiropractic Sports Medicine?

Sports Chiropractic, also known as chiropractic sports medicine, is an evolving and budding branch of chiropractic, which aims at improving the performance of athletes of different sports. This particular branch of chiropractic expertise is a great boon for athletes and others who are or want to be physically fit. Besides healing and preventing musculoskeletal injuries, sports chiropractic helps in improving overall performance, endurance, agility, and strength. Chiropractic care has been around for hundreds of years, but it was in 1980 that a chiropractor started working with the United States Olympic medical team. Ever since then, the use of chiropractic care and healing in sports has only increased. Today, most of the professional teams have an in-house chiropractor that their athletes have at their disposal.

Understanding The Role of Sports Chiropractors

The job of a sports chiropractor is a specialized one. They often rely on specialized healing techniques along with other forms of non-invasive treatments for their clients, including cold laser therapy and spinal decompression. Sports chiropractors are expected to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of different common sports-related injuries. For athletes, chiropractors use a 'hands-on' approach for every injury to the best possible extent, without using drugs or medicines. In extreme cases, an athlete may need both therapeutic treatments and chiropractic healing, and for such situations, a sports chiropractor may suggest other forms of healing and care, as well. If you are physically active, visiting a sports chiropractor can be beneficial in many ways.

What Else Is There to Know?

Before you visit a chiropractor, you should know their areas of expertise. As mentioned, sports chiropractors are known for their understanding of injuries and common issues related to various sports. On your first visit, the concerned staff will ask a few questions and other aspects related to training, thoroughly examine you and possibly obtain diagnostics before rendering or suggesting a treatment plan. Look for clinics that are known for their treatment and can offer other forms of alternative treatment. Usually, sports teams do hire their chiropractors separately, but if you are an athlete and need more than just general care, you can consult an expert independently.

Finally, on your first visit, it is best to ask questions as for how chiropractic care can help you in particular. An experienced chiropractor should be able to discuss and explain these aspects in detail.

Each year in the United States, players of sports and recreational activities receive between 2.5 and 4 million concussions. How dangerous are all those concussions? The answer is complicated and lies in how the brain responds when something strikes it. Clifford Robbins explains the science behind concussions.

Chiropractic and the Opioid Epidemic: Rethinking Our Approach to Pain

Inadequate pain management coupled with the epidemic of prescription opioid overuse and abuse has taken a severe toll on the lives of tens of thousands of people in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as one in four patients who receive prescription opioids long term for non-cancer pain in primary care settings struggles with addiction. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in the ER for misusing prescription opioids.

Deaths involving opioids are six times higher than in 1999; in 2017 alone, more than 47,000 people died from overdoses involving the drugs. That same year, another 2 million people abused or were dependent on opioids.

Beyond the risks of addiction and overdose, prescription drugs that numb pain may convince a patient that a musculoskeletal condition is less severe than it is or that it has healed. This misunderstanding can lead to overexertion and a delay in the healing process…or even permanent injury. Chiropractic and other conservative (non-drug) approaches to pain management can be an important first line of defense against pain and addiction caused by the overuse of prescription opioid pain medications.

Rising Recognition of the Value of Non-drug Approaches to Pain There is a growing body of research that validates the effectiveness of chiropractic services, leading many respected health care organizations to recommend chiropractic and its drug-free approach to pain relief.

In 2017, the American College of Physicians (ACP) updated its guidelines for the treatment of acute and chronic low back pain to recommend first using non-invasive, non-drug treatments before resorting to drug therapies. ACP’s guidelines, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and based on a review of randomized controlled trials and observational studies, cite heat therapy, massage, acupuncture and spinal manipulation (a centerpiece of chiropractic care) as possible options for non-invasive, non-drug therapies for low back pain. Only when such treatments provide little or no relief, the guidelines state, should patients move on to medicines such as ibuprofen or muscle relaxants, which research indicates have limited pain-relief effects. According to the guidelines, prescription opioids should be a last resort for those suffering from low back pain, as the risk of addiction and overdose may outweigh the benefits. In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released guidelines for prescribing opioids that also promote non-pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of chronic pain. In 2015, the Joint Commission, the organization that accredits more than 20,000 health care systems in the U.S., including every major hospital, recognized the value of non-drug approaches by adding chiropractic and acupuncture to its pain management standard.

Conservative Care First: A Common Sense Approach

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) encourages patients and health care providers to first exhaust conservative forms of pain management, when appropriate, before moving on to riskier, potentially addictive treatments such as opioids. To this end, ACA delegates met in Washington, D.C., in 2016 and adopted a policy statement proposing a solution to the dual public health concerns of inadequate pain management and opioid abuse. ACA’s policy statement supports:

1. The investigation of non-pharmacologic interventions for pain treatment across a variety of patient populations and healthcare delivery setting
2. The promotion of evidence-based non-pharmacologic therapies within best practice models for pain management
3. The improvement of access to providers of non-pharmacologic therapies
4. Interprofessional education to augment the training of pain management teams
5. And public health campaigns to raise awareness of drug-free treatment options for pain syndromes.
