Chiropractor for Headaches

Chiropractors are trained to evaluate and diagnose the exact cause of your headaches. Muscle tension headaches and migraine headaches are second only to back pain when it comes to chronic pain issues. You can see a medical doctor for expensive tests such as MRI or CT scans of the brain, or for prescription pain killers that carry many harmful side effects.

Chiropractic care for headaches

The best chiropractic care is natural and pain free, without the use of hazardous medications. Chiropractors are experts at treatment of many types of headaches, especially those that may be caused from a vertebral subluxation in the spine. Vertebral subluxation is defined as a condition in which the vertebrae of the spine are restricted in range of motion, has altered the muscle tension on either side, or results in abnormal functioning of the nerves that exit the spine. Studies have shown that the most common types of headaches are relieved by chiropractic care. Even the most severe headaches are relieved when spinal subluxations and/or jaw problems are corrected.

Top Chiropractic doctors locate areas of the spine that are not moving properly, and they correct the problems by using spinal adjustments. They evaluate spinal curves and anomalies to determine if there are contributing conditions. Chiropractors are trained to recognize the signs of rare problems that may require immediate attention. They have no reservation about referring you to another medical professional if that is more appropriate.

The causes of headaches

Headaches are a symptom of some primary cause. Symptoms are the way that your body informs you that something is not right. Mild headaches are often the result of occasional problems brought on by excessive smoking, drinking or eating. Others symptoms can range from eye strain, improper diet, hunger, Daily pressures and even constipation. Headaches can also be attributed to untreated conditions such as brain tumors or diabetes. Chiropractors will perform a thorough examination to help identify the most likely cause.

The best chiropractic care for headaches

The best chiropractic care uses gentle cervical spine manipulation coupled with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and physiotherapy as the preferred modes of treatment for headaches. The doctors are some of the best chiropractors.

Their first goal is to address your pain and provide pain relief, then to provide thorough and effective treatment. Additionally, they cooperate with other treatment specialists such as dieticians and massage therapists. They will also provide lifestyle coaching as a way to teach each patient how to take an active role in preventing future problems. Take the time to improve your quality of life.

What Exactly Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic care centers on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and the effects of these conditions on the overall health of the individual involved. Chiropractic care focuses on the diagnosis, intervention, and prevention of mechanical ailments of the musculoskeletal system, and in particular the spinal column, pursuant to the speculation that these disorders influence normal health through the neurological system. Chiropractic relies on a process of diagnosis and care using the approach where the nervous system coordinates all of the operations of the body, and also that malady results from a lack of optimal neurological operation. Chiropractic care aims to restore the body's natural neurological function and therefore allow the body to correct these ailments through it's innate ability to heal itself.

Chiropractic is generally used to take care of back and neck discomfort, and yet chiropractic care may also be used for treatment of other neuromusculoskeletal problems, for example painfulness of the joints within the arms or legs, and even headaches. The main chiropractic treatment method involves manual therapy, consisting of an adjustment of the spine, other joints of the body, and soft tissues. The treatment plan can also include exercises as well as health and lifestyle guidance. Doctors of chiropractic do not recommend prescription drugs or perform surgeries, although they do refer individuals for such treatments if they are clinically indicated.

One of the founding concepts of chiropractic is that true health originates from within. In other words, we are generally born with everything that we need to live full, healthy lives. The word "chiropractic" blends the Greek words cheir, indicating hand, and praxis, indicating practice, to explain a treatment done by hand. Chiropractic health care professionals usually employ hands-on treatments, including a spinal or extremity adjustment, however, they might also make use of different treatment procedures as needed. Chiropractic care is based upon the idea that the connection between the body's structure, principally that of the spinal column, and its performance, as synchronised by means of the nervous system, affects health.

The spinal manipulation, also known as the chiropractic adjustment, is the most typical treatment procedure executed by chiropractors. The purpose of adjusting should be to re-establish joint mobility by means of manually implementing a controlled force into articulations that have become hypomobile, or restricted in their movement, resulting from a tissue injury. Muscular injury may be triggered through an individual traumatic event, along the lines of incorrect lifting of a large item, or perhaps by means of recurring stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with bad spinal posture for an extended period of time. In any case, injured tissues experience physical and chemical modifications that can cause swelling, discomfort, and decreased performance for the patient. Manipulation of the impacted joint and tissues, restores movement, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, in addition to enabling tissues to recover.

Chiropractors may assess patients by way of clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and additional diagnostic interventions to ascertain if chiropractic treatment is suitable or if it is not applicable. In some instances, chiropractic might be the predominant and most effective method of treatment. With conditions such as chronic neck or lumbar discomfort, this is frequently the case. If additional health concerns exist, chiropractic care can complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal symptoms linked to the ailment. Chiropractors will commonly refer patients to the appropriate health care specialist when chiropractic care is not suitable for the patient's ailment, or the condition merits co-management in combination with other members of the medical team.

Conditions That Can (And Can't) Be Treated With Chiropractic Care

Are you wondering whether you should set up an appointment with a chiropractor? People have many reasons to get chiropractic help, from whiplash treatment to sports chiropractic care. Read on to learn who should and should not receive chiropractic care.

Conditions that Chiropractic Treatments Can Alleviate

Sports injuries. For those who are passionate about sports, chiropractic treatment can make a huge difference. Long-term sports injuries are especially treatable through sports chiropractics. Moreover, because chiropractic adjustments return the body to its natural state of balance, professional sports teams often retain a full-time chiropractor. Avid runners, cyclists and other athletes often find that consistent chiropractic treatments help them maintain top performance levels.

Workplace injuries. Long periods of desk work or repetitive motions can be a real pain in the neck (or back, or hips). Chiropractic adjustments often bring immediate and lasting pain relief for those who engage in repetitive movements or sit for long hours at work.

Chronic pain. Chiropractic care targets the spine, which carries all messages of pain to the brain. The spinal column may become misaligned due to poor posture, a car accident, a sedentary lifestyle or injuries from sports. Chiropractic adjustments can bring healing for those who experience chronic pain in the hips, back, arms, legs, neck and shoulders. Finally, whiplash treatment from a chiropractor often relieves pain stemming from an automobile accident.

Migraines and chronic headaches. Migraine sufferers often benefit from a visit to the chiropractor. Rainstorms can exact torture on migraine sufferers, as shifts in barometric pressure often trigger migraines. Research has found that chiropractic adjustments are as effective as some medications that are commonly prescribed for migraines.

Plantar fasciitis, sciatica, and fibromyalgia. Of the numerous specific conditions that chiropractic care can treat, plantar fasciitis, sciatica and fibromyalgia are among the most common.
Whiplash. Chiropractic whiplash treatment has not been widely studied for effectiveness, but after a trip to the chiropractor, whiplash sufferers often experience significant pain relief.

Conditions that Should Not be Treated with Chiropractic Adjustments

Idiopathic scoliosis. Unlike other forms of scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis usually develops during adolescence. Not enough research has been done on whether chiropractic treatment is safe for this form of irregular curvature of the spine.

Certain musculo-skeletal conditions. Musculo-skeletal conditions including osteoporosis, acute rheumatoid arthritis, bone or joint infections, bone cancer, and spinal cord or bone marrow diseases should not be treated with chiropractic care.

Spinal surgeries or major injuries. If you have had a major spinal surgery or injury, it's best to stay away from the chiropractor. There are many healthcare alternatives for those who have had major spinal surgeries or injuries.

Have you recently suffered an injury in a car accident or while playing sports? Chiropractic medicine may be a good form of whiplash treatment for pain. Visit Mississippi Chiropractic's website to schedule an appointment.

Chiropractic For Back Pain

Introduction to Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a continuously growing practice of non-invasive procedures used to alleviate pain and headaches. It is a healthcare approach focusing on the relationship between the body's structure, specifically the spine, and the body's functions. Practitioners may use a variety of approaches, but primarily they perform adjustments to the spine with the goal of correcting alignment problems and encouraging the body's natural ability to heal itself. Misalignments in the spine can interfere with the flow of energy needed to support health.

The term chiropractic itself comes from the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (action) to describe treatment done by hand or hands-on treatment. Today, chiropractic in the United States is considered to be a Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Some chiropractic procedures can even be traced back to ancient times. Chiropractic is based on three key concepts:

  • The body has an ability to heal itself
  • The body's structure, especially the spine, and the body's functions are closely intertwined and this relationship affects overall health
  • Treatment aims to rectify this relationship between structure and function enabling the body to do what it does naturally, heal itself

According to a national survey from 2007, about 8 percent of American adults and 3 percent of adolescents or children had received chiropractic manipulation in the past 12 months. Those figures are probably higher today.

Why Chiropractic?

Many people seek chiropractic care in lieu of surgery, or simply because they have pain which may be brought on by stress or physical injury. This may be chronic low-back pain, neck pain, headaches or other pain related health conditions such as fibromyalgia. Although chiropractic is not a treatment for any one disease or condition, if there is a misalignment, chiropractic may help a body's healing ability. Because chiropractic is a natural, non-surgical and non-invasive treatment it is wise to consider chiropractic for any of these pain related issues and definitely before undergoing any surgery for such problems.

If surgery is clinically indicated, chiropractic is also often utilized even after surgery to assist the body in its natural healing process.

Common Chiropractic Misconceptions

Although chiropractic has been around since the late 19th century, there are still various misconceptions about chiropractic treatment. Even though there are over 60,000 chiropractors practicing in the US today, and colleges all over the country offer chiropractic certification, we still see some common misconceptions when the term chiropractic is mentioned. If we can clarify or understand some of these misconceptions it may assist individuals to feel more comfortable about chiropractic care. Here are some of these misconceptions and an explanation of the facts.

  • Chiropractors can only treat back problems: While chiropractors are known for treating spine problems and back pain, chiropractic treatment itself is more of a holistic approach focused on correcting spinal problems which in turn helps all of the body to operate at its optimal functionality. Chiropractic not only helps alleviate back pain, but may also help to cure a child's ear infection, a person's headaches, lower blood pressure, help with the pain of arthritis, and many other ailments.
  • Chiropractors can prescribe medicine and perform surgery: While some chiropractors may provide heat/cold therapy, offer additional types of physical therapy and even oversee herbal therapy, they do not prescribe drugs nor do they perform surgery. Chiropractic itself is based on the idea that the body is able to heal itself and the chiropractor is helping the body to realize its innate ability to do so.
  • Chiropractors are not real doctors:Chiropractors are indeed certified doctors, schooled in the specific field of medicine called chiropractics. They must pass national board exams and licensing tests like all certified doctors before they can practice.
  • Once you go to a chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life: A lot of people confuse maintenance appointments with a never-ending series of visits to the chiropractor. However, like regular exercise and good nutrition many chiropractic patients choose to get checked for misalignments regularly as a healthy way of life and to maintain the body's optimal health and performance. A treatment plan will be discussed with the patient and it is always the patient's choice whether or not they are benefiting from repeat visits.
  • I have had surgery on my spine so I am afraid to use chiropractic: Many chiropractic patients have had surgeries, or are in wheel chairs or even have steel rods in their backs. They still enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care. Each patient is different as is their situation and treatment plans are based on the needs of the individual.
  • Someone said I have a pinched nerve: Actually a pinched nerve is really a bone on a nerve and it is a rare occurrence, happening only to about 15% of the population. Most likely you have an irritated nerve or a facilitative lesion. Chiropractic may help this condition.

Chiropractic for Children?

You may not realize how important it is to have children checked for subluxation or misalignment of the vertebra. Subluxations do occur in children and often have little or no symptoms at this early stage. The birth process alone is a very traumatic experience for a child's body and can certainly cause enough pressure for a subluxation to occur. I am sure you've heard of deliveries resulting in broken collar bones and breech deliveries, etc.

Subluxations can also occur when the child is learning to walk and also when they are older and playing sports and games. What is important to note is that children have certain windows of development that are often only open for a short period of time. This is predicated by the neural system which is the first system formed in a child's development. If the neural system is being affected by subluxation your child's potential is being limited. Chiropractic moms have claimed that their children are more expressive, don't get sick as often and have better concentration than those who do not benefit from chiropractic treatment.

Some Famous People Who Enjoy Chiropractic Benefits

Famous athletes and movies stars are continuously enjoying the holistic benefits of chiropractic treatment. Here are just a few.

  • Mark Victor Hansen
  • Tony Robbins
  • Tiger Woods
  • Dan O'Brien
  • Lance Armstrong
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Sylvester Stallone
  • Jon Bon Jovi

So don't give up on a natural chance to help your body heal itself. Check into chiropractic. You never know until you try.

Understanding the Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care has many benefits, as thousands of patients who enjoy more manageable, pain-free lives following their treatment would be happy to tell you. With chiropractic, you'll discover that alternative treatment is one of the most effective ways to reduce your pain, avoid the need for drastic interventions such as surgery or strong prescription medications, save a good deal of money, and most importantly, get healthy. Some proven benefits of chiropractic care are discussed below to help you decide how to proceed.

Pain Reduction

Chiropractic is popular for its ability to alleviate pain and other problems in the back and neck. Your joints can also benefit from chiropractic treatment, and chronic arthritis sufferers can enjoy lifelong improvements without resorting to strong medications or surgery. In short, chiropractic care can provide pain relief for all areas of the body.

Chiropractic treatments significantly reduce pressure on your spine, and this, in turn, reduces pain in your back, legs, knees and feet. Stiff areas also improve, becoming more flexible, and you'll experience fewer muscle spasms. You'll find that you're able to move more easily and you're more energetic. Your range of motion can increase and your coordination can improve. All these benefits will make performing life's daily tasks much easier.

Faster Healing

Many accident victims and patients recovering from serious illnesses heal faster due to chiropractic care. Chiropractic treatments relieve pressure throughout the body, allowing the body to begin to heal as it should. The relief provided by chiropractic care is sometimes very quick, and some patients feel benefits immediately after their first treatment session. Your chiropractor is able to realign your limbs and joints, resulting in fast relief.

Because your body may have been overly stressed or out of condition for quite some time, you might feel some minor pain or discomfort during your first few treatment sessions. This initial response is normal, and your chiropractor may be able to tell you when you can expect to start feeling more comfortable during and after your treatments.

Chiropractic treatments can be used to treat an assortment of illnesses and other health conditions. They can also be used as a supplementary treatment to facilitate the healing process.

Affordability

Chiropractic is one of the most cost-effective types of healthcare. It can eliminate or reduce the stiffness and pain you feel in your joints and muscles, and it can help your body heal faster. In contrast, traditional medical treatment frequently involves expensive interventions such as surgery, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Prices for chiropractic vary, but frequently, treatment sessions are all you'll need. You can often avoid expensive medications or an intrusive surgical intervention. The costs of your chiropractic care may become even lower over time, because your body may require fewer treatment sessions. Long treatment courses are sometimes associated with lower overall costs, and this can be a significant benefit. Many chiropractic practitioners accept insurance and payment plans, and those who are only willing to accept cash may be willing to give you a discount.

Fewer Risks

Chiropractic care does not involve risky, painful surgical procedures, which often have a long recovery period where you are unable to do much for several weeks or even months. Risky treatments with steroids are also not an issue with chiropractic care. In fact, the risks involved with chiropractic care are very low.

You can be certain that your chiropractic treatment sessions will be efficient and effective when you have a competent, qualified, licensed chiropractor. And depending on how you respond to treatment and your current condition, your chiropractic care might only require a few sessions.

Chiropractic - The Unknown Champion

Though chiropractic has been around for more than a 100 years, is proven effective for the treatment of back pain that nearly 80% of people will encounter in their lifetime, it is still only utilized by 12-17% of that population. This fact alone seems staggering but when you consider that it is far safer option than even taking simple over the counter medications the story becomes even more bewildering.

According to a national survey back pain is the most prevalent chronic medical problem and accounts for and estimated $50 billion to $100 billion in annual US healthcare costs. With the baby boomer population aging, this probably can be expected to escalate. Now more than ever the healthcare community needs to focus on using the most effective and affordable means of solving the communities health problems in a strait forward and logical manor.

Chiropractic is Woefully Underutilized

Chiropractic is the 3rd largest healthcare industry, a distant 3rd. The public perception is that we are spine specialists, yet we are seldom recommended as a treatment option in any type of medical literature. Chiropractic care has a long history of research supporting its effectiveness and affordability. It is even recognized and included in the department of defense as basic care. All this and less than 20% of the population in need finds their way through the chiropractic doors. And often this is not until they have failed with another care method.

It would seem that there must be some reason for the underutilization of this valuable and effective service and there is-- Chiropractors.

Only recently has chiropractic as a whole tried to integrate with mainstream medicine. We have battled and raged and tried to stand out all through the last century. All the while giving us the reputation as a maverick sort with a huckster vibe promising to cure what ails ya with a quick twist of the neck. There are still hold outs but the vast majority of those educated in last 10-15 years have been schooled in an evidence based approach to treating headache neck and back pain. Make no mistake, this is the present and future of chiropractic care. Reliable realistic evidence based care the is part of the overall medical community.

Chiropractors are Portal of Entry Providers Not Primary Care Providers.

This means that people have direct access to these services similar to dentists and optometrists and don't need to be approached through the medical doctor or some other referral source. The flip side of this is that chiropractors are not primary care providers in that the research at this time reports that they are effective for musculoskeletal conditions like headaches neck and back pain. While they are well educated in nutrition and general health, they are first and fore most musculoskeletal specialists. See the chiropractor for your back low back and sciatica, not for your asthma or diabetes.

These are some strong points of Chiropractic.

· Chiropractors are the spinal health experts in the healthcare system.

· Chiropractic has the ability to improve function in the neuromusculoskeletal system, and overall
health, well-being, and quality of life.

·Chiropractic is a specialized approach to examination, diagnosis, and treatment based on best available research and clinical evidence, and with particular emphasis on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.

· Chiropractic has a tradition of effectiveness and patient satisfaction.

·Chiropractic is conservative, clinical, safe treatment approach without the use of drugs and surgery, enabling patients to avoid these when possible.

· Chiropractic has proven cost-effective in the managed care, workers compensation and Medicare markets.

· Chiropractors are expertly qualified providers of spinal adjustment, manipulation and other manual treatments, exercise instruction, and patient education.

· Chiropractors collaborate with other health professionals.

· Chiropractic is patient treatment approach focusing on individual responsibility for health, encouraging patient independence.

· Chiropractors are expert, professional, ethical, knowledgeable, and compassionate healthcare providers.

How to Best Utilize Chiropractic

Most research on chiropractic's effectiveness has been done on acute and chronic lower back pain, acute and chronic neck pain, and headaches. These three conditions make up make up 95% of the conditions for which patients seek chiropractic care. These are also the best reasons to visit your chiropractor.

Headaches neck and back pain is where chiropractic shines and that is where it's utilization should be. Chiropractic is a great entry level therapy for these patients. Chiropractors are well versed in non-invasive treatment that has the lower risk for harming the patient and the best chance or improvement than any other option of care. Chiropractic is also the most cost effective method of care because the evaluation of back pain is the same as at the Primary care office but fees are lower.

Failure to improve on a chiropractic trial of evidence based manipulation is not common. For those who do not progress they can be referred out for more invasive investigation confident that their current condition will not respond to manual manipulation. All this adds up to better cheaper care with the best chance for a positive outcome for the patient.

Unfortunately this is often the exact opposite route that patients follow arrive at the chiropractor. They most often find the chiropractic after passing through surgeries or several other failed procedures and therapies. Thus taking what may have been a simple acute injury that would have responded well to conservative care a more complicated and resistant problem may have gone on too long for chiropractic to be of help.

The base thing to take away from this article is that chiropractic is not an end all be all of back pain care that holds all the answers. It is just a research proven best place to start to logically find a way out of pain. Properly utilized it is a valuable tool in the physicians workshop, but a hammer can't drive a nail if you don't pick it up.

A Simple Secret To Avoid Lower Back Pain

Some people have ongoing chronic lower back pain. For some it is constant, for others it may come and go but its presence causes the quality of life to suffer.

There are others who go weeks or months having no lower back pain and then suddenly from something innocuous like stepping off a curb, or bending the wrong way they experience what is commonly referred to as their "back goes out".

Here is a secret that can be followed to help avoid low back pain: Start slowly in the morning!

Try these tips if you or someone you know has had problems with the back:

• When getting out of bed it is better to do a "side up" versus a sit up. When we sit up to get out of bed in the morning it increases pressure on our lower backs and is irritating to the discs of the spine. It is much better to turn onto your side and swing your legs over the side of the bed as you raise yourself up with your arms.

• Stretch gently in the morning. Have you ever noticed that when a dog or a cat arises after laying down for a while they always stretch. Instinctively they know it is best to warm the body up before becoming active. Certainly a professional athlete would never think of exercising, practicing or engaging in their competitive sport without warming up first. When we total all the activities that we perform during a typical day many of us are actually doing more physical work than a professional athlete will undergo. We need to warm up.

A warm-up exercise as simple as lying on our back and gently pulling each knee up towards the chest and holding it for a few seconds, several times can be effective to help prepare the back for the rest of the day. Gentle yoga stretching and poses are another helpful method to prepare our lower backs for the days stresses.

• Take it easy for the first hour after arising. The lower back is especially vulnerable the first hour after awakening and getting out of bed. If we perform even mildly strenuous activities during that time the lower back can get irritated. Many people find if they "stir their back" up early in the day it persists through the remainder of the day. Conversely, if they start slowly and warm their back up earlier in the day the back feels better as the day proceeds.

It also helps to schedule vigorous activities like exercise or performing chores like vacuuming, gardening or grass cutting after we've been up for an hour or two. If we put these activities off until later in the morning it will help to alleviate back problems.

This also pertains to sports such as golf. Golfers are notoriously susceptible to injuring their back if their round is in the early morning.

While there is no silver bullet that will heal a chronic ongoing lower back condition these are several ideas that, if followed, over time will allow the lower back to heal and, in many cases, be much less of a quality of life problem.

Is Neck Pain Causing You To Be A Pain In The Neck?

In my 30 years of practice as a chiropractor I have seen neck pain cause problems for many patients.
One of my patients, a mother to three younger children, felt that her neck pain was causing her to be cranky, irritable and less patient with her kids. Another patient, a gentleman who was a supervisor to a handful of employees at his company, noted that his pain in the neck was causing him to be tired, fatigued and less able to give his coworkers the attention, support and direction they required.

Constant, ongoing neck discomfort while perhaps not life-threatening can certainly cause us to experience a poor quality of life. In fact, 70 percent of adults in the United States are affected by neck pain at some time.

People try different remedies to alleviate their pain in the neck. Some people reach for anti-inflammatory medication. While this may provide short lived, temporary relief it does not correct the cause of the problem and can cause serious side effects to the gastrointestinal system and the kidneys. Others desperate for relief may turn to surgery for their condition.

Fortunately there is a nonsurgical, drug-free approach to alleviating neck pain. Research findings from the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain And Its Associated Disorders found that spinal manipulation, sometimes called a spinal adjustment, is the best approach in the treatment and care for those having pain of the neck. This was an authoritative research study that also said at neck pain with the absence of a radiating arm pain should be treated rarely by means of surgery.

Most spinal manipulation in North America is performed by Doctors of Chiropractic. Chiropractors typically have 7 to 9 years spent in classroom and clinical education to learn how to effectively and safely treat patients suffering from neck discomfort.

Occasionally, one may hear in the media that a chiropractic manipulation to the neck is unsafe. However the Task Force on Neck Pain declared that this claim is unfounded. The study concluded that there is no link between spinal manipulation of the neck and significant injury or damage.
