What is Chiropractic Care and How Can it Help Me?

A Chiropractic practitioner is a member of the physical health care providers. There discipline involves manipulation of the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems. There claim is that disorders in these systems can affect your overall health and these systems need to be brought into complimentary working relationships.

The most common reason to go to a local Chiropractor is if you are having headaches, back pain, neck pain, shoulder compression pain or any other pains in your muscles or in your spine.

Chiropractors are also doctors. They are doctors of Chiropractic medicine. What confuses some people is that they do not use medicine or any other drug. Their approach to medicine is holistic and involves a thorough knowledge of the skeletal system and the points of injury that could be causing your discomfort and your pain. A chiropractic doctor will diagnose your condition and offer therapy in his office that can be hands on manipulation of your spine, massage beds and other machines aimed at re aligning your muscular skeletal system to a healthy positioning.

Many chiropractic centers also offer counseling in lifestyle habits to encourage you to become healthy without drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic is commonly known as spinal manipulation. Most chiropractic patients go in regularly to have a chiropractic adjustment of their spine. Continued pressure on some muscles affect the spine and forces a restricted mobility because of the pain involved. These injured muscles or tissues continue to stress the spine and produce painful chemical reactions caused by the constriction of space between the injured tissues and the spine.

Inflammation, soreness. pain and compression of injured muscles cause an imbalance in your spine. A doctor of chiropractic realigns your spine and attempts to open up the injured tissues to normal body chemical transfers which lets your injured muscles and tissue heal naturally. Chiropractic procedures are not painful. They are a pain reliever without the pain medication. Chronic headache sufferers can probably find better and more long lasting relief by a spinal realignment than by prescription or over the counter medications that can in time affect other vital organs in your body.

Chiropractic doctors make their diagnosis based on your personal history and your initiating visits problem. They also use x rays and laboratory testing when they deem them to be necessary. Chiropractors can refer their patients to other health care practitioners if their patients condition is in need of it or can benefit from it.

5 Reasons You May Need Chiropractic Treatment

One of the most sought-after forms of alternate healing is chiropractic treatment, and many people visit chiropractors every day for various reasons. These can range from relieving headaches and lower back injuries to improving mood and sleep patterns.

The idea behind chiropractic treatment is not only to ease the pain, but also to improve the quality of life by lessening systematic troubles, complications to the central nervous and muscular systems. Many people shy away from seeking chiropractic treatment for various reasons, but if you are not a fan of conventional medical treatments or are not looking to go into surgery then you might want to consider visiting a chiropractor. Furthermore, here are 5 good reasons to seek chiropractic care.

1. Stress Relief
The body functions at its best when it is correctly aligned. The nervous system is responsible for sending pain signals from various parts of the body directly to the brain. In the case of improper spine alignment, whole body feels its impact. This can then result in physical stress throughout the body. On the contrary, a balanced and well-adjusted body results in less tension and allows individuals to manage stress better.

2. Alleviating Pregnancy Pain
Throughout their pregnancy, many women go through chronic back pain as a result of changing weight distributions on the joints and pelvis. Muscle spasms and pain may increase the possibility that an expecting mother will struggle during her labor and delivery.

Chiropractic treatment aims to balance the pelvis, muscles, and ligaments during pregnancy in order to release pressure on the uterus. This form of treatment increases the chances of the child being born naturally as opposed to the mother going under the knife for a C-section. Around 72% of women reported finding relief from pain during their pregnancy and labor from chiropractic treatment.

3. Improving Posture
Many people have given into a sedentary lifestyle, which doesn't do much to improve the posture. In fact, more and more patients are complaining about curves in the spine and an overall poor posture. The neck curve is generally delicate and can become prey to a number of issues due to constant texting and computer overuse. However, chiropractic care helps realign the spine and neck in order to lessen pain and improve posture.

4. Managing Behavioral and Learning Disabilities
Chiropractic methods enhance wellness and can assist in reducing disruptive behaviors and hyperactivity associated with ADHD and learning disabilities linked to autism. Evidence shows that chiropractic care can improve a child's ability to pay attention, which in turn betters behavior and learning by restricting causes of agitation.

5. Normalizing Blood Pressure
Around 33% of Americans are affected by hypertension. Chiropractic treatments can control blood pressure significantly since they are known to lower both diastolic and systolic blood pressure readings. In fact, studies suggest that chiropractic procedures work just as good at regulating hypertension as two of the most widely prescribed medicines do. The main focus of chiropractors lies on the bone situated at the top of the neck, close to the brain, which may result in blood pressure management.

If any of the above apply, you may need chiropractic treatment. Schedule a consultation with your chiropractor to ensure a healthy, stress-free life.

Chiropractic: An Important Ingredient to Health and Wellness

The art and science of the practice of Chiropractic has been around for over 100 years and can be a valuable tool for the person seeking improvement in health and wellness. Chiro- is derived from the Greek word for hand and praktikos - meaning the practice of or practical. Generally speaking Chiropractic focuses on finding small misalignments in the spine or vertebral column termed subluxations (luxation is a complete dislocation) and aligning the relationship of one vertebrae to the next one. These subluxations or misalignments in the spine are commonplace and can happen due to posture or chronic repetitive movements as well as acute pathology, injury and even pregnancy.

Chiropractic has over the last hundred years become mainstream moving from Eastern philosophy to becoming a part of Western medicine. Fundamentally, traditional Western medicine had treated the disease or pathology or symptom from the outside in with computer diagnostic equipment, medications and surgery. In contrast, Chiropractic is based on diagnosing the underlying cause of the disease or symptom with the premise that the central nervous system and related sympathetic and parasympathic system controls all body functions and operates like a computer program. The nervous system is comprised of nerve pairings which are split to perform their respective functions. Each pairing is split into a sympathetic branch to the muscles for fight or flight instincts as well as a parasympathetic branch for rest and digestion functions.

With a general understanding of the history and philosophy of Chiropractic let us now look at how this discipline can be used to assist in the achievement of improving and maintaining health and wellness. Few if any of us are fortunate enough to get through this life without experiencing spine or extremity misalignments. These misalignments can come as early as the birthing process! Then from toddlers through school age adolescence it is rare to not be involved in accidents such as falls, sports accidents, car accidents, poor sleep and sitting postures. As we get old enough to work there becomes more opportunity for postural imbalances and work and auto accidents. Then as we age into hopefully better health habits we face new obstacles in the form of arthritis and generally decreased activity. The list of who can benefit from Chiropractic is a simple answer...everyone can to some extent. How much one can benefit and how often treatment is required depends on many factors including age and acuteness or age of condition.

Chiropractic is by nature not a treatment of conditions but rather an alignment of the body to heal itself by being able to function as efficiently as possible. With that being stated however, patients have increasingly chosen Chiropractic to improve and at times alleviate symptoms such as headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain as well as helping with arm and leg pain and numbness, disc problems and much more.

Most importantly Chiropractic should be considered as a resource in achieving and maintaining an optimal state of health and wellness. Chiropractic has become a leader in alternative medicine and natural healing. With much criticism by Western medicine and western model insurance companies, Chiropractic has had to prove its necessity through word of mouth for much of the past hundred years.

Starting with the champion San Francisco 49er's of the 1980's Chiropractic became introduced into the NFL with documented positive outcomes for the star players of the team. Many of the players were in fact documented attributing Chiropractic to helping prolong their careers. Today it is commonplace for all sporting teams from high school to professionals to have Chiropractic be a part of the healthcare team.

Health and wellness therefore requires a combination of considerations to achieving optimal function. Chiropractic can be used effectively to achieve and maintain efficiency as well as assist following any occupational or environmental stressors that create injury, postural or nerve imbalances. Remember, do all you can to achieve health and wellness...the quantity and quality of your life depends on it. Best wishes.

Understanding What A Chiropractic Adjustment Is

Chiropractic adjustment or spinal adjustment are terms used by a chiropractic physician to describe the act of correcting bones of the spine that are misaligned. It is also called spinal manipulation at times by other health care professionals. Chiropractic adjustments are performed with special instruments or specific hands on techniques to adjust the spinal bones back into their proper position. Chiropractic adjustments effectively reduce pain and restore normal function of the joints affected. Spinal manipulation has been documented as being used in ancient times by the Egyptians and by Hippocrates.

People often notice a popping sound when receiving a chiropractic adjustment. This sound is the result of air or nitrogen gas being released when the bone moves. Adjustments are performed by applying specific pressure to the vertebra using parts of the vertebra or structures surrounding it as levers.

Spinal manipulation helps to restore normal motion and function of the vertebral joint. There are several different adjustment techniques performed by chiropractors. Some require the use of hands while others require the use of instruments that are specially designed for this.

They may perform a release technique. This involves a gentle constant pressure over the vertebra to help it move back into position. Chiropractors may also use special tables that have sections that drop down. This technique involves a quick thrust at the same time the table drops. The dropping of the table assists the adjustment to provide a deeper thrust with less force. It also helps to avoid twisting motions that other techniques require.

Special spring loaded or electronic instruments have been designed to perform chiropractic adjustments. Instrument adjusting often involves the most gentle techniques for performing spinal manipulation. It allows for an adjustment that is a higher velocity requiring less force to move the bones.

Chiropractic adjustments are widely used to help with various musculoskeletal problems and other conditions in the body. They have proven to be effective for reducing stress, improving range of motion and restoring normal function of the nerves that control every cell and organ in the body. People seek out chiropractic care for conditions such as neck pain, back pain, headaches and numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Chiropractic is effective in restoring normal function of the musculoskeletal system rather than just treating the symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective. The chances of being injured by a chiropractic adjustment are extremely low. They also support the body's natural ability to heal itself.

The Importance of Chiropractic Treatment In Preventing Back Surgeries

We are all suffering from different kinds of body pains and back pain is probably one of the most popular types of pain experienced by any person whether they are working or just staying at home.

If you want to know some of the important facts about the benefits of chiropractic treatment to back pains and how this condition affects the greater population, here are some of the things that you need to know.

Surgeries and No Surgeries

This is a very important fact that you need to know because based on a recent statistics, 42.7 percent of the people who consulted a surgeon first had surgeries while only 1.5 percent of people had surgeries when they consulted a chiropractor first. With this statistic, we can already find out how chiropractors really work.

Just like the aim of this medical procedure, they are aiming for zero surgeries and they only allow the body to heal itself by improving this capability. This is the main reason why a lot of people are consulting chiropractors first before they go to a surgeon. Besides, if your condition really needs surgery, they will recommend you to go to a doctor right away for immediate treatment.

Surgeries Depend on The Professional that you Consult

When it comes to popularity, back injuries are probably on the top of the list when it comes to body pains. It is also said that the surgeries of people for different back injuries will depend on the professional that you will consider first. This is directly linked on the first fact. It means that if you consulted a chiropractor first, there is a chance that you do not have to consider a surgery.

You have to remember that surgeons are supposed to conduct surgeries so when they see a problem on your back, this is the only solution that they have. On the other hand, chiropractors are professionals and experts when it comes to these kinds of problems so they have several treatments that they can use to prevent any surgeries.

Back Surgery is Not Always Needed

It is said that back surgery is not always a solution since this is probably your last resort when it comes to treatments. It means that if you visit a chiropractor right away, the chances of needing a back surgery will be lessened. You have to remember that most of the back injuries can be taken care off even without any kind of surgery.

Chiropractic Treatment Is Suitable For The Elderly

Chiropractic care focus on the connection between the musculoskeletal structure and the body functions with special regards to the spinal area. Our nervous system is responsible for controlling the functions of other organs, muscles, and body systems. The nerves and the nerve roots are connected from the brain into a vast muscular bundle widely known as the spinal nerve. It travels along the spine and branch out in the spinal vertebrae. These vertebrae connect the various body parts and organs towards the spine. Any condition that pinch the nerves, such as trauma, pressure, or spinal misalignments, can cause disruption of the function of the nervous system.

It is not surprising that as we get older, our body functions begin to deteriorate. Our muscles respond slower and shrink. Our body has less than the body requirement for fluids. Our bones lose density and become more brittle. The elderly are much more prone to musculoskeletal injuries. When they get injured, they take a longer recovery period. If they seek medical treatment, their age can mean they become more sensitive to the side effects of medications and surgery puts them at far more risk.

Given this set of conditions, medication-free and noninvasive chiropractic treatment is preferably suited to older people. In working with the elderly, DCs make use of gentle techniques appropriate to the aging body. Ongoing wellness and preventive care are essential elements of treatment. This may include recommendations on exercise, nutrition and lifestyle modifications.

At present, chiropractic care is the third largest health care system that provides a safe and effective treatment for pain due to spinal misalignments. Since many health problems are linked with irregularities in the spine, chiropractic is very efficient in dealing with these various conditions. Chiropractors are specially trained to identify and treat subluxations. According to them, these subluxations cause unfavorable disturbances with your nervous system. Anti-inflammatory medication regimen and other pain relievers only mask the symptoms, may cause unwanted side effects, and do not deal with the real cause of the problem. Chiropractic care provides a drug-free, pain-free, and safe treatment that takes care of the root of the problem.

Do you know that musculoskeletal injuries due to falling are very common among our elderly? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for about 90% of the 850,000 bone fractures which happen every year among Americans past the age of 65. DCs can reduce the incidence of falling by using chiropractic adjustments to stabilize the mechanoreceptors located on the cervical spine. Additionally, they will provide instructions on how to do stretching and exercise to increase overall flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination, and strength.

Chiropractic adjustments for the elderly can enhance the range of motion of the spine and extremities. For the elderly, this would allow them to bend and lift up their young grandchildren. They can also do much more activities without experiencing any pain. It can absolutely enhance their daily functions. Oftentimes, increased range of motion is immediately observed after a few sessions of chiropractic rehabilitation.

Our bodies are designed to function and move. It allows us to do various activities and go to different places. As we get older, all those movable body parts eventually wear down. For this reason, it is important for the elderly to have their spine aligned properly. Chiropractors, such as professionals from Chiropractic Colorado Springs, normalize the alignment of the spine and reduce any strain on it to decrease spinal deterioration and other aches and pains.

Chiropractic therapy can help lessen pain, improve joint function, enhance mobility, increase balance and coordination, and decrease stiffness. Although it's not truly a fountain of youth, chiropractic can do wonders in improving your comfort and quality of life.

Chiropractic For Treating Neck Pain - How Effective Is It?

The techniques used in chiropractic and neck pain have been associated for over 2,000 years. Long before this field of conservative medicine has been recognized by the mainstream medical community in the United States, chiropractic was being widely used in the early civilizations of Greece, India, and China to alleviate neck pain and other forms of pain.

A spinal adjustment to treat neck pain?

A common misrepresentation of chiropractic care is that chiropractors work merely by snapping the neck into different directions until something luckily closes into place. While chiropractors are widely credited for their spinal adjustment techniques (In the case of the neck, it is called cervical adjustment.), they also use a wide range of gentle non-force and soft-tissue therapeutic tools, such as massage therapy, lifestyle suggestions, and an exercise program to supplement the primary spinal adjustment.

How effective is chiropractic for neck pain?

Chiropractors believe that a slight maladjustment in the alignment of the spine causes tremendous setbacks in the functioning of the nervous system. Enter neck and back pain, and other body pain which is the result of these setbacks. Through hands-on spinal adjustment, chiropractors can fix the spine and allow the body room to heal itself more quickly. Chiropractic care usually requires more than one session of spinal adjustments and the supplementary therapeutic solutions to fully alleviate the pain and bring back the body's healthy condition.

Does chiropractic workon all neck issues?

Chiropractic and neck pains do not always go together, but they often do. In cases where the pain is induced by postural strain (the kind caused by sitting in a bad posture in front of the computer the entire day), traumatic injury (caused by whiplash or other injuries from automobile accidents, herniated and ruptured discs, and osteoarthritis and other degenerative processes reminiscent of aging, chiropractic can be a viable solution. It is important, though, that the chiropractor employ all diagnostic tools to thoroughly examine other factors that may be causing the pain. When the practitioner detects a fracture or an organic disease, he may have to refer the patient to another specialist who can administer the appropriate drugs and other treatments for the specific conditions.

Who can receive spinal adjustments for to treat the neck?

Practically everybody may receive chiropractic care for pain, but it is imperative that a chiropractor implements a physical and neurological checkup first before devising a chiropractic program for his patient. Posture is one of the first things to be examined. If the chiropractor detects an abnormal curvature of the spine or if one of the shoulders or hips is lower than the other, there must be reason to believe that something is wrong. However, posture is not the only important thing and does not completely indicate the need for chiropractic care. The practitioner also examines the extremity joints, muscle tone and strength in the middle and upper back, and the range of motion of the bones.

Chiropractic Pain Relief Without the Side Effects

In the United States, Chiropractic is a natural way of healing which does not include any drugs or medicines. It is into existence for more than 100 years. Chiropractors in recent times are very skilled and highly trained in the field of health care. Chiropractors can help you in many ways like treatment of back pain, joint pain or arthritis.

Chiropractic care has proven to be very beneficial for people with chronic pain. The kind of treatment chiropractic provides is said to be beneficial for normal functioning of the spine and in reducing pain as well. Chiropractors are highly trained for this. A recent study compared chiropractic spinal adjustment to Celebrax/Bextra/Cox-2 inhibitors for the treatment of chronic pain. This was published in July 2003 in Spine which is number one orthopedic journal in the world. Chiropractic treatment was proven to be 5 times better in case of chronic spinal pain as compared to Cox-2 inhibitors. It was also observed that the medicine caused more pain, side effects and reactions as compared to the natural healing process of chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic treatment has been practiced for many years and has many ways to treat old patients in a safe manner. Food advice also comes under chiropractic treatment as some food have bad effects on inflammation and cause harm. There are other kinds of foods that help our body to produce hormones that are anti-inflammatory. There are nutrients that can increase the production of anti-inflammatory hormones in our body and are completely safe. There are no reactions or side effects as our body makes these anti-inflammatories itself. It is said, prevention is better than cure. With chiropractic treatment, you can reduce the rate at which your spine ages. It has been observed that spinal manipulation can help the spine from aging and avoid arthritis and other similar problems.

You can find all the advantages of spinal manipulation in the scientific literature and chiropractic care is becoming popular day by day. Research is being carried out regarding the various aspects of chiropractic care. It is a sad thing to notice that there is not the right kind of awareness in the people regarding the effectiveness of chiropractic care and how naturally it can heal various problems like neck pain, back pain and shoulder pain. It is an important field of health care and should be given proper attention as it is free from drugs, side effects and pain.

Tips for Ensuring Chiropractic Treatment Is As Effective As Possible

Visiting a chiropractor on a regular basis is one of the best and smartest things you can do to reduce and eliminate chronic neck and back pain. Additionally, this treatment will help you maintain a good range of motion and flexibility. When you visit a chiropractor, they will design a specific treatment plan that is tailored to your needs and that will not just feature the typical adjustment, but other suggestions as well. Your chiropractor will work with you to determine an exercise routine and nutritional changes that can be made in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of the treatments that are provided. However, there are still a few things that you can do in order to ensure your chiropractic treatments are as effective as possible.

These steps that you can take to ensure you receive optimum results from chiropractic treatments include:

Outline Your Symptoms in Detail

If you want your chiropractor to provide the best possible treatment for your pain or problem, it is essential that you be as detailed as possible about the symptoms that you are experiencing. In most cases, you will have a combination of treatments, which will work best if your particular problem is understood. Chiropractic care is a type of holistic healing, which means that all aspects of your live and health are considered when developing the treatment plan that will be used.

Even if you feel that symptoms you are experiencing are unrelated to your pain, you should disclose the information to your chiropractor. This will determine the treatment plan that is followed. The most common types of treatments you will encounter from a chiropractic visit include therapeutic exercises, chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization and specific changes in nutrition.

Be Sure to Keep Moving

One of the goals of chiropractic treatment is to ensure that you maintain your range of motion and flexibility. Remember the old adage "Use it or lose it!" In order to receive the most effective results from your chiropractic care you need to combine the treatment with regular exercise. This will also ensure that the results from the treatment last as long as possible.

Some exercises that you should consider are ones that will stretch and strengthen the muscles around the spine, so that it cannot easily fall out of alignment. When you follow the exercise suggestions from your chiropractor, you will find that you experience less pain and recover faster from your specific problem.

Consider Getting a Massage

There are many cases where therapeutic massage can be used to enhance your chiropractic care. This is because it works to enhance the circulation of fluids and blood in your body and restore the actual free flow of your nerve impulses. A therapeutic massage can help to break up adhesions that are in the fascia and help to ensure your muscles remain moving properly. Additionally, massage can help to ease the muscle tension and make joints more pliable and much easier to adjust. It is important to discuss massage with your chiropractor prior to seeking the treatment, as there are some that do not support the benefits that are offered.

When you incorporate these suggestions for your regular scheduled chiropractic treatment regimen, it can increase the benefits that these treatments have to offer. When you reap all the benefits that a quality chiropractic appointment has to offer, you will likely find that they have a significant impact on your life, as well as your overall health and well-being. Be sure to discuss everything with your chiropractor to ensure the most positive results from your treatment.

Chiropractic Treatment of Whiplash Injury: What Can a Chiropractor Offer?

Each year approximately 2 million Americans suffer a whiplash type injury. Chiropractic care can be extremely beneficial in these cases. A Chiropractor can help assist patients with both the short and long term effects of whiplash associated injuries. Before we consider the numerous unique benefits offered by Chiropractic care in the treatment of whiplash, let's briefly discuss what exactly a whiplash injury is.
What exactly is whiplash? Surprisingly, the name "whiplash" isn't an official medical term at all. Rather the term "whiplash" is a non-medical term commonly used to describe a sprain and strain injury to the soft tissues of the neck. Whiplash is considered an acceleration-deceleration type injury and occurs when the cervical spine, or neck, is abruptly forced to stretch and move beyond its normal range of motion. This typically involves the neck suddenly extending backward and then flexing forward beyond the normal anatomical range of motion. This results in an overload injury due to excessive forces being placed on the cervical spine. The initial injury is actually thought to be tearing of muscle and ligament fibers within the neck. Although predominately an injury to the muscles and ligaments, whiplash may also include injury to the intervertebral joints, discs, and nerve roots. The degree of injury can range from minor to severe.
As if the initial injury weren't bad enough, the response of the body post injury can further complicate matters. After the injury muscles in and around the area respond to by contracting in spasm to splint and stabilize the area. This limits movement of the head and neck and is the body's well intentioned efforts to prevent movement and further injury. Essentially the body attempts to make its own soft collar to limit motion of the head and neck. Unfortunately this can eventually lead to chronic pain, inflammation, stiffness and loss of range of motion.
Whiplash is usually associated with an automobile accident, but it can occur in many other instances. Whiplash can also be caused by things such as a fall, or an impact or collision in a sporting event or recreational activity. Some examples are a fall from a horse, a collision in football, or an impact experienced in basketball, boxing, or hockey.
What are some of the symptoms of whiplash? Headache is a frequent symptom of a cervical strain. In addition to headaches and neck pain, other symptoms of whiplash may include:
- Neck stiffness
- Dizziness
- Shoulder pain
- Back Pain
- Changes in vision
- Abnormal sensations in the neck, hands and arms (such as burning, pins and needles, numbness, or tingling)
Surprisingly, symptoms are not always an accurate indication of whether or not a patient has whiplash. Contrary to common misconception, whiplash isn't always obvious at the time of injury. Many victims of whiplash related injuries often do not consult with a health care provider because they do not have neck pain at or immediately near the time of the accident or injury. This is a mistake because symptoms of a cervical sprain and strain can take time to manifest themselves. Generally speaking, the onset of symptoms is much faster in more severe injury. A severe case of whiplash injury may cause pain and symptoms immediately or within hours. In a more mild case of whiplash symptoms may not occur for weeks or months.
Many victims of an automobile accident do not seek medical or chiropractic attention because their accident occurred at a low speed. There is a misconception within the general public that high speed impacts are needed to cause whiplash. This couldn't be further from the truth. Studies show that the soft tissues in your cervical spine have an injury threshold of 5 mph. In other words, an impact of 5 mph or greater can theoretically cause damage to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the neck.
The likelihood of developing whiplash in an automobile accident depends on a multitude of factors and speed is just one variable. The position of the head and neck at the time of impact, the direction of impact, the position of vehicle headrests, whether or not a seatbelt was worn, and whether the occupants saw the impact coming are just some of the additional factors involved.
It is obvious that any impact or collision should be taken seriously. A victim of a car accident or other impact would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider as soon as possible afterward, even if no symptoms are present. A Chiropractor is a great choice.
Few health care providers are as well educated on the anatomy of the cervical spine or as well prepared to address the musculoskeletal effects of whiplash related injuries as a Chiropractor. Chiropractors receive extensive training in the normal structure and function of the cervical spine. They are also equipped to recognize and treat both the acute and long term effects of whiplash injury.
Chiropractic care can be of great value to a patient in the acute phase of a whiplash injury. During the acute, or early, stage of whiplash a Chiropractor will place an emphasis on controlling and minimizing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and symptoms. During this early phase of care a Chiropractor focuses on gentle treatment. Application of ice and cold therapy is common to control swelling and inflammation and to help alleviate pain. A Chiropractor may also use special forms of therapy such as electric muscle stimulation or therapeutic ultrasound to relax muscles and help reduce pain. Cold laser therapy, acupuncture, trigger point therapy, massage therapy, gentle stretching and joint mobilization techniques are also common early treatment techniques available to many Doctors of Chiropractic.
As a whiplash injury heals, symptoms often progress from pain to stiffness and inflexibility. A Chiropractor is equally beneficial to patients at this point. As you progress from the acute phase of care a Chiropractor will focus on correction, flexibility, and prevention. At this point a Chiropractor may begin to utilize more intense forms of therapy. These treatment options will include things such as chiropractic adjustments to restore proper spinal alignment and nerve function, along with prescribed stretches and strengthening exercises.
So what makes Chiropractic care different from conventional medical care? Most often conventional medical care focuses on the alleviation of pain and symptoms. This is usually done primarily through the use of drugs and medication. While getting a patient out of pain is certainly important, it is only part of the clinical picture. The long term effects of injury, rehabilitation, and prevention of future injury are all areas that need to be addressed as well. The focus of Chiropractic care extends well beyond the treatment of pain and symptoms.
A Chiropractor works with patients long after pain and symptoms have decreased or subsided. In addition to symptoms, a Chiropractor is also concerned with treating posture, spinal alignment, and any abnormal spinal biomechanics. Even after a whiplash injury has healed, a Chiropractor can continue to offer a great deal of benefit to the patient. A Chiropractor can provide a patient with ergonomic advice, home exercises, and a stretching and strengthening program to restore normal range of motion and help prevent further injury in the future.
Another benefit of Chiropractic care for whiplash patients is the fact that a Chiropractor is trained to evaluate and treat the entire spine. The spinal column is one large kinetic chain. It consists of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. The effects of forces and impacts exerted to one area of the spine are not isolated to that area. Injury to the cervical spine can, and does, impact the middle back and low back areas as well. The ability to examine and treat the entire spine is just another unique benefit offered by a Chiropractor
Yet another benefit is the fact that a Chiropractor is also educated to recognize how spinal misalignment can affect the overall health and wellness of a patient. A Chiropractic health care provider views injury and treatment from a different point of view than the most of the traditional medical community. However, Chiropractors also recognize the unique limitations and advantages of each health care profession and will refer to, and work in cooperation with, medical providers as needed.
In conclusion, whiplash type injuries are a common occurrence within American society. Research has shown Chiropractic care to be effective in the treatment of pain and the musculoskeletal effects of whiplash. A Chiropractor is armed with the knowledge, tools, and skills necessary to address cervical spinal dysfunction and the related effects. If you or a loved one feels they may suffer from whiplash, be sure to seek the advice of a qualified health care provider as soon as possible. A Doctor of Chiropractic just might be the ideal choice!

How to Have Perfect Posture at Work | Chiropractic Care

As a chiropractor, I think a lot about posture. And one of the activities that seems to cause a lot of stress in most people's bodies is spending prolonged periods of time at a desk or computer. So I spend a lot of time talking to people about how to have proper posture at their desk or work station. So here is the skinny. You want to sit in a chair where your sacum, or your low back, touches the back of the chair. It's best to have a chair where you can really have good back support. You want a chair that's designed for your body. So that the seat is not too deep for you, or not too shallow. You want your knees to come close to the end of where the edge of the seat is. And you want your feet to be able to touch the ground.

Most of us sit on chairs with our feet up on the rung. Or tucked up under us. And we want to make sure that the feet are actually on the floor. So adjust the height of your chair so your weight is on two feet, and two (?). That'll really distribute the weight properly through your entire muscoskeletal system, and put the least amount of strain on your body.

So let's talk about keyboards. Many people put their keyboard on a desk. Either because they're using a laptop, or that's just where they put the keyboard tray. But it's really important when you're at a keyboard, that your shoulders are dropped. So this is how you should set it up. Your shoulders should be completely dropped. And your elbows should be dropped and resting at your side. You want a right angle at your elbow. And no break at your wrist. This means that your keyboard should be about the height of your elbows.

Most people have their keyboard a little bit higher. And you might think, well what's the difference? It's just a few inches higher. But the difference is that when you have to start using the mouse, you end up engaging the elbow and the shoulder muscles. And this causes isometric contraction in those muscles. And that can really add up to a lot of pain by the end of the day.

I recommend that people get keyboard trays. The kind that screw on under your desk. You can slide them out. Get a wide one so you can put your mouse on it too. This way when you don't need your keyboard you can slide it under your desk, but when you need it you can adjust it just for the height you need for your body.

Now let's talk about the screen. The middle of the screen should be exactly at eye level. Or maybe an inch below. Many of us are putting laptops or computers on desks and the screens are a little too low. And that means that we're flexing our head forward all day. And that puts enormous strain on our neck and our shoulders. So raise your screen up a little bit. So that the middle of the screen is right at eye level. You'll be glad you did it. It'll make a really big difference.

Why Chiropractic Care? 5 Reasons To See A Chiropractor

If you have not tried Chiropractic care yet, it might be because your first choice when you need medical care is the status quo. You probably don't know much about chiropractic care and what it can offer you. Like most people, you probably call your general practitioner for an appointment no matter what is wrong with you. Headache, backache, joint aches, allergies... You call your normal physician without giving it any thought at all. But the truth is you can get a lot of expert care from your chiropractor.

Here are five reasons to go to a chiropractor.

Chiropractic care costs less - Americans suffering from back pain spend over 60 billion dollars a year trying to seek relief, most of it unproductive. Several workers compensation board studies found that chiropractic care reduced medical costs by almost 30% compared with conventional care for back pain. Studies by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) show that more of the money you spend with a chiropractor goes to patient care.

It works - Studies show that chiropractic care for back pain is less expensive and more successful than other forms of treatment. In addition, chiropractors can get you back to work faster by avoiding drugs and surgery. Studies show that for long term relief from pain, chiropractic care works better than drug therapy without the side effects and chiropractic does it faster.

More than backs - Aside from back pain, you can get medical attention for headache, joint pain, allergies, smoking cessation, nutritional counseling, and overall wellbeing. Many chiropractors can do sports physicals and general employment physicals for less than you can get them done with your general practitioner. Chiropractors look at the whole picture, not just one symptom to find a treatment that will work best for you.

Avoids invasive procedures - Chiropractors do not like invasive procedures so we seek to treat a patient in such a way as to avoid surgery. The fact is, surgery doesn't work as well as you might think it does. Surgery costs a lot of money and caries a risk of infection, side effects and other unsavory problems. Chiropractors seek to fix the origin of the problem, rather than treat only the symptoms.

Health insurance often covers it - Fortunately, many chiropractic procedures are covered by your health insurance. We all know that insurance companies like to find reasons not to pay for something so the fact that insurance companies see the value in chiropractic care is more assurance that chiropractic care is effective.

Chiropractic - A Great Treatment for Back Pain

Chiropractic deals with improving the functioning of joints and the spine to treat illnesses. It relates to the theory that our body is controlled by the nervous system, so it is important to maintain your spinal cord and make sure it stays in the best condition. Chiropractic is a form of medicine that helps one improve their health. There are two underlying beliefs in chiropractic. First is that the body is structured in a way that it heals itself. Second is that there is a direct link between the structure of our body and its functions. It has been observed that every structure has its own functions and should be treated accordingly.

Chiropractic is a science that helps cure any hurdles in the flow of nerve transmissions. The spinal cord is the main pathway that carries sensations from our nerves to the brain.

Chiropractic is a helpful treatment for back pain, dizziness, headache, neck pain, sprained ankle, and scoliosis. It is also very effective for knee, elbow, upper leg, and foot and rib pain.

Some common treatments by chiropractors are listed below:

Chiropractic treatment for back pain

Back pain is a very common complaint among people. It can happen to people of any age group, 30 plus being the obvious. The pain comes from different kinds of body parts surrounding the spinal cord, such as muscles, bones, joints and nerves. Lower back pain is the most common form of back pain and is one of the primary reasons when people seek chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic treatment for neck pain

Neck pain is also one of the very common problems whose occurring rate is high among women. Its treatment is drug- free and involves spinal adjustments. The treatment solely involves a chiropractor's hands to treat the subluxations which happen when a vertebra is moved out of position. This results in intense irritation and pressure near the spinal nerves. Once the spinal adjustment takes place, it cures the subluxation and gives relief from severe pain and also increases the circulation and of blood by speeding up the nervous system.

Chiropractic treatment for a sprained ankle

Tripping and twisting your ankle sounds very familiar. Sometimes you keep wondering what caused your ankle to twist when there wasn't any irregular surface or any stone in the way. It takes several days for you to recover until your ankle gets back to normal. Bringing back your ankle to its normal condition requires some proactive therapy. Chiropractic treatment is helpful if pain is caused by weakness in the calf muscles.

Time required for chiropractic treatment

Time for the treatment is evaluated once the chiropractor examines you. He then decides how much time will be required, but usually it takes around two to three sessions a week. These sessions don't last for more than 20 minutes. Once the treatment starts progressing and you start improving, the sessions will shorten.

Chiropractic treatments are more effective compared to conventional medical treatments. It has been observed in different surveys that the ratio of chiropractic patients improving quickly is higher than that of medical patients.

Chiropractic Care - History and Origin

Most people would probably think that the chiropractic field is a relatively new method of health treatment compared with conventional medicine. Very few know the actual history of chiropractic, but the truth is that it began long ago and has been successful in improving patients' ailments for thousands of years.
Definition of Chiropractic Care
The term chiropractic comes from the Greek "chiro" meaning hand, and "practic" referring to practice or operation. And in its early days and still today much of chiropractic care involves "hand treatments" to manipulate the spine back into its proper position.
Chiropractors focus on the connection between the alignment of the spine and the functioning of the surrounding muscles and nerves. They emphasize the practice of only noninvasive and natural health care methods.
The Ancient Days
Using the hands and other methods to manipulate the spine dates back all the way to ancient China and Greece. During the time period of 2700 B.C. To 1500 B.C., records were made documenting the use of such chiropractic care by physicians of the day.
And later, around 400 B.C., two Greek contemporaries, Hippocrates and Herodutus both employed the practice to cure their patients. In some of his writings, Hippocrates said, "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases."
Daniel David Palmer
Little was heard of chiropractic care in the Western world until 1895, when a man named Daniel David Palmer founded the modern chiropractic profession in Iowa. Palmer had been in the business of magnetic healing until September of 1895 when he had an interesting encounter with a janitor at his office.
The janitor had been deaf for several years. He told Mr Palmer that his hearing loss occurred suddenly one day after he had bent down in an awkward position, and heard a "pop" in his back. Palmer felt the man's back and found a vertebra grossly out of position.
"I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored," Palmer recorded in his notes."With this object in view, a half hour's talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before."
Soon after this "miraculous" success, Palmer took on a new role, as the first American chiropractor, using spinal realignment techniques to improve everything from the flu to migraine headaches to epilepsy to heart problems.
Palmer once said of his discovery, "I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebrae, but I do claim to be the first person to replace displaced vertebrae by using the spinous and transverse processes as levers... and to develop the philosophy and science of chiropractic adjustments."
In 1898, he began the Palmer School & Infirmary of Chiropractic to help others take on the role of chiropractor. Since that time, chiropractic care has become one of the largest branches of the medical field with hundreds of new chiropractors graduating each year from accredited colleges and universities.

Is Chiropractic a Good Choice For Back Pain?

The spine is a very complicated structure. It is composed of twenty-four moveable bones (the vertebrae), five layers of music, nine common ligaments, the central and peripheral nervous systems, and various connective tissue. The vertebrae offer protection to the spinal cord. They are moveable and can twist and bend in a variety of positions. While this freedom of motion allows us to locomote and move our bodies in a variety of configurations, it also can set the stage for injuries. Joints that are pushed too far can suffer sprains and strains. Joints that don't get enough motion can get stuck. Abnormal gravitational loading on the joints and soft tissues cause degenerative changes such as arthritis and disc disease.

Chiropractic is the philosophy, art and science of natural healing. It is concerned with the integrity and function of the spine and nervous system. A doctor of chiropractic (D.C.) is a physician who is an expert at evaluating, diagnosing and treating problems with the spine. The process starts much like it would when visiting any other doctor.

There is some paperwork that is completed (including a description of the problem and a medical history). Then the chiropractor will have a consultation followed by an examination to discover the cause of the problem. In the examination, the chiropractor will do a variety of orthopedic and neurological tests. Following this, there may be diagnostic tests (such as x-ray, MRI, etc.). Then the chiropractor will diagnose the problem, give the patient a prognosis and present a treatment plan.

How does a chiropractor help to eliminate back pain? The prescribed therapies may vary greatly from doctor to doctor. These therapies may include chiropractic adjustments, physical medicine therapies (including ice, heat, decompression, massage, acupressure, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, diathermy, infrared, traction, acupuncture), active care rehabilitation (stretching, exercises for strengthening and stabilization), and nutritional therapies (such as professional strength supplements designed to reduce pain and inflammation at the chemical and cellular levels).

The chiropractic adjustment is concerned with restoring normal joint motion, re-aligning the vertebrae, relieving pressure on the nerves (which may be pinched due to vertebral misalignment), eliminating muscle spasms, and of course eliminating pain. The doctor of chiropractic has four years of specialized training in the art of delivering adjustments. The adjustment is a low-force correction in which the chiropractor gently slips the bone(s) back into their normal position while restoring normal joint motion. Adjustments are almost always pain-free and result in an incredible sense of relief and well being.

Many people have never been to a chiropractor. They may not have ever even considered going to a chiropractor. They may have thought that chiropractic is a new concept or experimental and unproven. But what they didn't realize is that spinal manipulation is nothing new. It has actually been around for thousands of years. Hippocrates (the father of medicine) himself said "look to the spine as the source of all disease". While bone setting has been around for millennia (as opposed to traditional western medicine which has only been around for 300 years), chiropractic as a profession started in 1895. Today there are over 70,000 chiropractors in the United States. It is a science-based form of health care that has become mainstream and accepted by the medical and scientific communities.

Not only is chiropractic extremely effective and all natural, it is also the safest form of health care known to humankind. Chiropractors pay the lowest malpractice premiums of any doctor. The reason for this is clear - they don't injure people. There have been hundreds of research studies done to investigate the risk associated with chiropractic adjustments. And the results came back that chiropractic is safer than drugs and surgery. One research paper showed that a patient has 100 times greater likelihood of being injured from taking a Motrin than from getting a chiropractic adjustment. So if your back is hurting, give chiropractic a try. You have nothing to lose but the pain.

Chiropractic Care - A Safe and Non-Invasive Way to Reduce Migraines

For people suffering from migraines, a non-invasive and safe way to lessen migraine suffering is Chiropractic care. Not just anyone should use chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is meant for patients who are unable to use prescription medicine because the medicines make them susceptible to other risk factors.

The cause of migraine headaches is still unknown in spite of the major advances in medical science that have been made in the last century. For this reason migraine headaches are said to be idiopathic. There are several theories that have been put forward to explain migraines and their causes. These include genetic malformations, arterial swelling in the cranium and serotin deficiency in the patient.

Another common theory associated with chiropractic theory stipulates that migraine headaches are caused by or in the least contributed to by subluxations in the muscles situated at the base of the skull and the neck. Subluxations can be defined as tense regions in the muscles adjacent to the upper spinal cord small bones. Medical doctors most often than not miss the tension since on an X-ray the bones appear to be in their correct positions. What a chiropractor does is relax the subluxations by manipulating the spine.

Mixed chiropractic and straight chiropractic are the two methods that a chiropractor uses to care for the migraine patients. Only the manipulation of the spinal subluxations and spine are involved when straight chiropractic technique is used. Mixed chiropractic however involves the combination of conventional manipulation and other complementary methods. Mixed chiropractic focuses on reducing the overall neck strain and tension.

A comparison between drug therapies and chiropractic care for chronic tension headaches and migraines was made recently by researchers from Northwestern College of Chiropractic. The college is in Minnesota. The result of the research was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. 218 patients were used in the research. Each patient was either given regular chiropractic care or drug therapy. At the end of the study the two groups each reported a forty to fifty percent drop in the headache pain.

After four weeks (four weeks from when all care was discontinued) a follow up on the patients from both groups was carried out and it revealed that the only patients who still had reduced headaches are the ones belonging to the chiropractic group. As for the drug therapy group, only twenty to twenty five percent of the patients still had the reduced headache pains as a result of the drug therapy administered earlier.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care Is Beneficial to a Child's Development

More and more parents are looking to chiropractic care as a complementary part of their children's health-care needs. The American Chiropractic Association reports survey findings showing an increase of at least 8.5 percent of chiropractic patients under the age of 17. A study by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention also stated that almost 3 percent of children in the United States receive treatment with chiropractic osteopathic manipulation.

As such, chiropractic is the most prevailing type of alternative medicine employed by children. Experts concur that chiropractic care can be useful for children who suffer from spine-related ailments. Like adults, children benefit from spinal manipulation and adjustments, as well as other kinds of care that fall under the purview of chiropractic.

However, chiropractic care should work as a complementary treatment to regular pediatric care. Chiropractic care works alongside a pediatrician's treatment, but it does not replace the role of a regular doctor. The pediatrician may prescribe medications for certain necessary conditions, and treat the patient for more serious illnesses and injuries. A pediatric chiropractor, on the other hand, is instrumental in providing preventative, supportive wellness care, as well as alternative treatment in some cases.

Some studies indicate that chiropractic care may help children with various common ailments, ranging from colic and bedwetting, to asthma and ear infections. This is in addition to back and neck pain treatment. Studies have been conducted in order to determine the value and effectiveness of pediatric chiropractic care. These studies, which showed mostly positive results, concentrated on conditions other than musculoskeletal and included issues such as tonsillitis, enuresis, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, asthma and colic.

In the case of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chiropractors are showing results with an alternative approach to treatment that focuses on nutrition, lifestyle, and postural muscle adjustments as opposed to the regular route of medication. This is no small gain considering how prevalent prescriptions for Ritalin, a commonly prescribed medication for ADHD, have become. Americans consume 90 percent of all prescriptions for Ritalin in the world - a fact that makes many parents weary of the traditional medical approach.

The widespread labeling and use of medication to address ADHD has become controversial, with many vague, but "undesirable" symptoms falling under the umbrella of ADHD. Some skeptics have also pointed to the link between the number of disabled children in a school and the amounts of funding a school gets.

In the case of ADHD, a chiropractic doctor begins by seeing the child as a whole, and seeks to consult with the child and the parents, asking questions such as, "Is the child bored or undertaking too many activities? Does the child have dyslexia, or a different learning pattern? Is he/she experiencing problems at home or with a teacher's style?"

This is a startling different approach to the standard, questionnaire-based evaluation for ADHD. Another criticism for the traditional treatment for ADHD is that drugs don't cure ADHD, and that most children who are diagnosed with it still experience ADHD symptoms in later years.

Chiropractic and chiropractic neurologists provide a non-invasive, holistic treatment approach that focuses on the underlying issue a child may be experiencing, not just the surface symptoms. Chiropractic neurologists identify the malfunctioning part of the brain, and seek treatment methods to address and correct the problem. A brain function exam is used, as well as tests focused on evaluating visual and auditory reflexes.

Once the underlying problem is singled out, patients are put on a treatment program that can often be done at home. Some patients might be asked to wear special glasses, smell a certain scent, or be put into timing therapies that help with planning, organizing, and coordination. It all depends on the individual child's needs. But the most striking element of chiropractic treatment is that it seeks to address brain activity itself, paving the way for long term results. Nutritional changes are also recommended in order to prevent biochemical imbalances that lead ADHD.

As for chiropractic spinal manipulation, the treatment itself is sophisticated and individually tailored; the treatment for children is also extremely gentle. Doctors of chiropractic employ an active, drug-free method of health care, which includes patient examination, diagnosis, and subsequent treatment. Most parents claim their children receive the benefits of improved health by regularly visiting a chiropractor, and their children enjoy their chiropractic visits and adjustments.

Quick Guide to Visiting a Foot Pain Chiropractor

Some chiropractors have extensive training and experience in handling pain related to the hands and feet. Can chiropractic care help in dealing with foot pain? Of course and in this post we will help you better understand the benefits of visiting a foot pain chiropractor.

Dealing with Foot Pain

There are varied reasons and causes for different types of foot pain, and chiropractic care can help in managing these. Some of the common foot issues include ankle sprain, bunions, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures (especially with long distance runner's) and Morton's neuroma. People often rely on painkillers whenever they have pain in the arch, sides of the feet, and heel of the feet, which may not be the best solution, especially if it's a recurring problem. Chiropractors understand the different concerns of patients and offer treatment that usually do not rely on drugs and surgery.

When to See and What Should You Expect from a Foot Pain Chiropractor?

A foot pain chiropractor has an exceptional understanding of foot problems, from pain and regular discomfort issues to sports injuries. They work on the underlying cause and proper alignment, so as to offer you long term relief as a treatment option. If you have been dealing with foot pain around the ankle, heels, and arch, it's best to see a chiropractor soon. When you first go to see a foot pain chiropractor, they will get a full history of your condition, listen to your concerns and want to know your treatment goals. There might be x-rays or additional diagnostics, like an MRI. If you are active, you might receive a bone length study to determine if your leg length is equal and also a laser foot scan to see if your arches are symmetrical. For conditions like plantar fasciitis, chiropractors can help in avoiding further complications. While you might feel the difference right after the first appointment, additional sessions might be necessary. Don't delay your visit, especially if you have had pain for a while. Also, people who have issues with running and other physical activities should also consider a chiropractor. Athletes often rely on these experts for treating pain on legs and other kinds of ankle problems.

Finding a Chiropractor

There are all sorts of clinics that treat these issues, but you need to choose one that's known for their work and expertise. Check online, and you will find many reviews of each clinic, on the office portal, as well as on third party sites. It is important to ask questions on your first visit. Make an appointment and ask questions about their graduate and post-graduate education/training.

Finally, consider visiting a foot pain chiropractor when you are engaged in any form of physical activity that can stress the feet and ankle, in particular.

Chiropractic Adjustments & Headaches | Chiropractic Care

Taking care of patients with headaches is one of my favorite things to do as a chiropractor. There are many causes of headaches, but chiropractic care is extremely effective at treating all forms of headaches. The first thing your chiropractor will do is a very, very careful case history and examination. There are many things that can trigger headaches, and your chiropractor will want to understand what contributes to your headaches. We'll also do a thorough musculosekeletal exam where we can identify areas that are restricted or not moving normally. There are many techniques that chiropractors use to treat patients with headaches.

Traditional chiropractic adjustment involves a very precise, defined thrust into the spine to restore range of motion in the neck or other areas in the spine. And this can be very effective at reducing pain and increasing range of motion very quickly. There are other non-force or gentle chiropractic techniques that chiropractors use that may involve gentle rocking motion or stretching motion or gentle pressure that can also be very effective at restoring the normal function of the spine and the nervous system associated with it to help restore range of motion and relax the muscles. Chiropractors will also use other modalities including massage, deep tissue, myofascial release or trigger point therapies that can be very helpful at relaxing the muscle spasm that's associated with headaches very often.

We'll also check TMJ and sinuses. The reflex work we can do on sinuses can be very helpful at helping to reduce sinus headaches. The most common form of headaches that people often present with is muscular tension headaches, where the muscles in the base of the spine right were the neck attaches to the cranium get very tight. And we'll work on those areas. And sometimes we'll apply other therapies like heat or ice or electric muscle stim to help increase the effectiveness of our treatment.

Your chiropractor may also make specific recommendations for home care, including nutritional recommendations for eating enough protein, eating on time, eating certain foods or not eating certain foods and drinking enough water. There may be nutritional supplements recommended for general health.

Your chiropractor will also review with you special postural considerations that are especially important for people with headaches, like how to choose the correct pillow and what position to sleep in, and how to sit at your desk or carry a shoulder bag without straining your neck and shoulder.

Just How Safe is Chiropractic Care For Children (And Adults)?

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children as Well as Adults?

The short answer to this important question is a resounding "Yes!" Children, as well as adults, are successfully - and safely - treated with chiropractic care every single day of the year. Children can safely receive chiropractic adjustments for treatment of almost any type of dysfunction of the spine, back or neck. However, because the bodies of infants, toddlers and young children are different from the bodies of adults, a specialized approach is necessary.

Chiropractic Care for Infants and Toddlers

Infants often experience trauma during the process of being born, and it's important for parents to pay close attention to any neck or spine misalignment that might have occurred. Infants are unable to tell you how they feel or whether they're suffering any pain, so look closely at your baby while he or she is sitting.

If your baby constantly looks in the same direction, it could eventually lead to an irritation. Chiropractic adjustments should be performed to provide relief for your infant. In addition to reducing your baby's discomfort, adjustments will permit an increased range of motion in his or her neck area. The stability of a baby's spine is crucial to healthy, proper development, and chiropractic adjustments are necessary to establish a normal pattern of motion as your infant grows.

Also, I have noticed that children who receive chiropractic care enjoy other long-term health benefits. They seem to be ill less often and suffer less frequently from ear infections.

Chiropractic Care for Children

Older kids usually quite active, and many are involved in sports and other activities which can expose them to back pain or issues with their spine or neck. In addition, some children endure migraine headaches. These can be treated through vertebral adjustments designed to eliminate or reduce the frequency of the migraines and the amount of discomfort they cause. It may have been different in the past, but now, children are frequently treated through chiropractic care.

How to Know When Your Child Needs Chiropractic Treatment: Look at the Symptoms

Spinal problems in children can be difficult to identify unless they reach a crucial stage or have become quite obvious. Nevertheless, early detection is essential to ensure that your child receives the medical care he or she needs to normalize bodily functions and relieve any associated discomfort. The common symptoms listed below can indicate a possible spinal dysfunction in your child:

One typical reason parents obtain chiropractic care for their young children is trauma caused by an injury. Whenever a child experiences a physical injury, it can result in a spinal misalignment. Sometimes, the injured child does not feel any immediate pain or discomfort, but the problem is internal and sometimes does not manifest itself for a while.

Is Chiropractic Care Truly Safe?

Chiropractic practitioners use a gentle approach with children. As with adults, chiropractic treatments administered to children can be painless.

A pediatric chiropractor would begin with an evaluation of the child's condition, conducted by asking the parents a series of questions. If the child is old enough, the chiropractor will ask the child if there are any specific complaints or problems.

Children typically respond to chiropractic care much more rapidly than most adults. In fact, most children only require a few treatments to restore normal function in the affected regions of the body.
