The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Children

There are a growing number of people who have realized the benefits that are offered for both adults and children through chiropractic care. The good news: you are never too old or too young to benefit from the treatment offered by chiropractors, which will have the experience and training to provide superior care for patients. Modern chiropractors understand how to work with even the youngest patients to ensure proper health and well-being.

Chiropractic Care Benefits for Children

When children reach school age and begin to interact with other children in a different setting, they will also become susceptible to their nervous system and spine being compromised. These compromises can be brought about by heavy backpacks, rough housing and their sitting posture. A chiropractor can help to address these issues, as well as problems that may seem much less obvious.
For example, there is some evidence that suggests that chiropractic care may work to relieve and prevent allergies including watery and itching eyes, coughing and sneezing as well as the common cold. This is not suggesting that a chiropractic treatment will eliminate these issues; however, it may help to strengthen a child's immune system over a period of visits.

Treatment for Infants

The chiropractic treatment that your child receives will be custom tailored to each child, according the specific circumstances, as well as the weight and height of the child. The fact is that there is no minimum age for chiropractic care, and that even newborns may benefit from the treatment method. There are some cases where chiropractic care may be able to be used to detect various spinal problems that may lead to asthma, ear infections and colic. With early detection, you may be able to help to prevent the actual development of these various conditions as well as the complications that are associated with them in order to improve the quality of life, for even the youngest patients.

Treating Older Children

As children age, they may find pain associated with growing and changes with their body. A chiropractor can help to increase the flow of blood and fluids to promote optimum health. Chiropractor care can be used for children from infancy through the college years and beyond. Not only will it help to strengthen the immune system, but this type of treatment can also be beneficial for preventing future problems and pain in adulthood.

Your Child's Health Care Team

Chiropractic care is often considered an alternative form of medicine, due to the fact that it is all natural and non-invasive, and lacks the use of any type of medication. It can be used to treat a wide array of ailments, which has made it extremely popular in recent years. However, if you choose to take your child to a chiropractor for treatment, it is important to talk over the decision with all members of your child's health care team. In most cases, the primary care physician, which is usually a chiropractic physician, general practitioner or pediatrician, can help you coordinate the care that is achieved. You should keep in mind that a great chiropractor will always be willing to let you know when the condition that your child is suffering from is outside of their realm of treatment. This is when they will likely refer you to a different specialist to seek treatment.

While there are many people against the use of chiropractic care for children, it has many benefits that can last far into adulthood. If you want your child to achieve optimum health and well-being, scheduling regular chiropractic care visits can be extremely beneficial.

Identify 7 Simple Triggers for Migraine Headaches - End Them Forever

Learn the right way to identify and avoid the common triggers for migraine headaches In 7 simple steps.

How exactly does one cure a chronic problem such as a migraine headache? When the dreaded migraine starts, it is all you can do to go lay in a silent, dark room. Unfortunately, our busy hectic lives do not allow us the luxury of laying in bed for a couple hours a couple times a month. The migraine headache has certainly been demonized but it is a warning symptom to tell you that something is not functioning properly in your body. I am going to go through an incomplete list of 7 simple steps to identify and avoid the common triggers for migraine headaches.

Step 1. Get plenty of sleep. This means that you need to get to bed early, avoid late night television, avoid exercising at night, and avoid stimulants, like caffeinated tea and coffee, in the afternoon to ensure a proper nights sleep. Lack of sleep and overuse of caffeine have been linked to migraines.

Step 2. Decrease stress and anxiety. This step can be extremely important because normally the attack does not happen until the stress is over and therefore, it is not correlated as being a contributing factor to a migraine headache.

Step 3. Hormone fluctuations. This will imply that migraines may occur more often surrounding or during the menstrual cycle, using birth control, or using estrogen replacement therapy. Sometimes women may experience their first migraine early in pregnancy and will diminish after the first trimester. Also women can experience a decrease in migraines if they switch to a low-dose contraceptive.

Step 4. Missing a meal or fasting. This will probably involve eating more frequently, eating dense protein, eating fat, and making sure emergency snacks are available for drops in the blood sugar.

Step 5. Avoid certain foods. A significant point to keep in mind here is certain foods like wine, cheese, processed foods, sodas, sugar, chocolate and other foods have been linked to migraines. Ever heard the saying you are what you eat?

Step 6. Identify any head traumas or head injuries because they are often linked to chronic migraines.

Step 7. Other triggers could be light glares, flickering lights, drugs, medications, cold foods, muscle spasms, spinal joint dysfunction, and pungent odors. You are now almost there! Remember, It is important to identify what you were doing proceeding the migraine to identify the triggers of the migraines. Migraines can also be a combination of any the above items.

Chiropractic For Seniors: Seven Outstanding Benefits

Many seniors are unaware of the outstanding benefits that are possible through regular chiropractic care. I have compiled a list of seven of the most frequent benefits that chiropractic care provides for seniors.

1. Pain Relief

Chiropractic care is one of the most effective and safest forms of health care to treat pain due to spinal related conditions. Chiropractic is so effective because most causes of spinal disorders are related to abnormalities of the spine and the surrounding soft tissue structures. Doctors of chiropractic are specifically trained to identify and treat subluxations (misalignments of the vertebrae) and their subsequent effect on the central nervous system. Anti inflammatory medication and pain relievers merely mask the symptoms and have many undesirable side effects.

2. Increased Range of Motion of the Spine and Extremities

Chiropractic care has been shown repeatedly to increase not only the range of motion of the spine but also in the extremities. Increasing a person's range of motion can positively and drastically affect lives in many ways. For some, an increased range of motion means being able to bend down to pick up their grandchildren. For others, it means they can garden without pain or get an extra 40 yards of distance out of their driver on the golf course. In many cases, an increase in range of motion immediately follows chiropractic adjustments. This is one of the reasons why many top professional sporting teams have team chiropractors.

3. Increased Balance and Coordination

Many problems in balance and coordination in the aging population have been shown to come from injury or degenerative changes to the cervical spine (neck region). Structures known as mechanoreceptors are located in the posterior (back) joints of the cervical spine and are responsible for providing the brain with essential information important for balance and coordination. Mechanoreceptors in cervical posterior joints provide major input regarding the position of the head in relation to the body. With aging, mild defects impair mechanoreceptors function and results in a loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness). With decreased proprioception, body positioning in space is impaired and the patient becomes reliant on vision to know the location of a limb. To compensate for the loss of proprioception (sense of body awareness) in the legs, the feet are kept wider apart than usual. Steps become irregular and uneven in length. As impairment increases, the patient becomes unable to compensate. With severe loss of proprioception, the patient is unable to get up from a chair or rise after a fall without assistance.

Studies have shown that chiropractic care can help restore balance and coordination by stimulating the joint receptors (mechanoreceptors) in the cervical spine. This stimulation is thought to restore or normalize joint receptor functioning which leads to improvements in balance and coordination. (Caranasos, MD, Isreal, MD. Gait Disorders in the Elderly. Hospital Practice. 1991; June 15:67-94.Guyton, MD. Textbook of Medical Physiology. 9th edition. WB Saunders, Philadelphia 1996; 714.)

4. Decreased Joint Degeneration

A subluxated (misaligned) spine is much like a misaligned wheel on an automobile. This misalignment will cause the spine (and the wheel) to wear out prematurely. Since all moving parts will eventually wear down over time, it is very important to get your spine aligned periodically. Chiropractic care decreases spinal degeneration and other arthritic changes by normalizing the spinal alignment and reducing spinal stress.

5. Increased Health and Well-Being

We commonly ask our patients what changes they notice once they are put of pain. Here are some regular responses we hear every day:

I feel great!

I can sleep through the night!

Now I can play in the garden!

I have so much energy!

Life is worth living now!

Yes, chiropractic is far more than mere pain relief.

Feeling good, staying healthy and doing the things that make us happy are what keeps us looking forward to each new day. Regular chiropractic care increase the quality of life and increase health and well being.

6. Decreased Incidence of Falling

Injuries due to falling are extremely common in the elderly population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are responsible for 90% of the 850,000 bone fractures which occur annually among Americans past the age of 65. Chiropractors reduce the risk of falls by normalizing the mechanoreceptors of the cervical spine by administering chiropractic adjustments. They also prescribe stretching and exercise programs to increase strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and coordination.

7. Keeps Seniors Out of Nursing Homes

While studying at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, I had the opportunity of meeting the president Dr. Ian Coulter. Dr. Coulter was involved with many research projects studying the benefits of chiropractic care and exercise.

In 1996, he published an interesting study in the Journal, "Topics of Clinical Chiropractic" called "Chiropractic care for the Elderly."

The key points he noted in this study were:

o 44% of those who used chiropractic care reported having arthritis compared with 66% in the non-chiropractic care group

o those who used chiropractic care were more likely to do strenuous levels of exercise

o at three years follow-up, less than 5% of those who used chiropractic care lived in a nursing home while a staggering 48% of those who did not use chiropractic care did live in a nursing home

o at three years follow-up, only 26% of those who used chiropractic care were hospitalized compared with 48% of those in the non-chiropractic group

There is no need for seniors to suffer needlessly. Chiropractic provides amazing benefits and has an outstanding record of safety and effectiveness. Ask your family and friends for a chiropractor that they recommend. Take action now and make an appointment to see if chiropractic can help you!

See a Chiropractor After an Accident

When it comes to your health, it is important to take all precautions. This is especially true when you are in an accident. One can never really tell the full extent of their injuries at the scene of the accident. Often times the worst of your problems don't even surface until days after the incident. If you have been in an accident, do yourself a favor and see a chiropractor. You could be saving yourself from a lot of pain.

When the crash first happens, it is important that you report the incident not only to your insurance company, but to the police as well. Before anything you do, call the police and report the accident. This is to make sure not only your vehicle is protected, but your health is as well. At the scene, the officer will make a report of everything that happened; whose fault it was, how it happened, when and where it happened. Most importantly, the officer will ask you if you suffered any injury during the crash. Even if you appear to look healthy, make sure you tell the officer if your neck, back, or anything else hurts. It is important to note this at the scene. You do not want to be caught paying for your health problems in the future if it was the effect of an accident caused by someone else. Remember, the worst of your health problems may not even be apparent yet. If necessary, and if you desire, the officer will send an ambulance. Reporting health concerns at the scene is to protect yourself even if you are not the one in pain. If the other party does not report a health concern at the scene, then you are protected if they try and say they are having health problems in the future.

One of the most recommended doctors you should make an appointment with after an accident is a chiropractor. Some of the most common pains after an accident are neck or back pains and whip lash. The impact of a collision causes misalignment in the spine, and in turn you may experience pain. A chiropractor will locate the origin of your pain. He or she will then adjust your neck and spine back into alignment and relieve neck and back pains. Depending on the severity of the injury, you may need to see a chiropractor more than once.

Two of the most important times to see a chiropractor are after an accident or an injury at the workplace. If your spine is out of alignment, you could be living with neck and back pains and headaches for a while. Remember, your entire nervous system is affected by the condition of your spine. The impact of an accident can cause serious manipulation to the condition of your spine. To be safe, it is suggested to see a chiropractor after an accident.

How Chiropractic Treatments Make For Effective Pain Management

There are times in everyone's life where they might feel overwhelmed by the amount of pain they experience on a daily basis. Ranging in intensity from minor aches and pains to chronic, debilitating back pain, over the counter medicines have little to no effect on the body. In order to manage this kind of pain effectively, it may be time to undergo some basic chiropractic treatments, like chiropractic adjustments or spinal decompression.

Chiropractic Treatments and Pain

Unless the pain is located around a specific injury elsewhere in the body, the source for the majority of the pain described is centered around the spine. It is literally the center of our physical well being and is the messenger service that tells the brain that we are hurting. The spine is responsible for supporting our bodies as we move about and any injury or irritation done to it will have consequences throughout the body before long.

This is where chiropractic treatments can be used as a pain management technique to alleviate chronic pain. By examining and adjusting the spine, the pain centers within it are quieted and all of the muscles and nerves connected to it begin to relax, and resume their normal level of activity. Patients of chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompressions will often report an immediate lessening of chronic pain, just for a few minutes work.

The Importance of Good Blood Flow

Besides alleviating pain, the secondary goal of any treatment from a chiropractor is to restore the flow of blood to an injured area of the body. Blood helps the body heal and when you increase the flow of blood to an area, you are jumpstarting the healing process. Before long, the nerves, muscles and tissues that were affected by the injury grow stronger and more resilient, thanks to the increased level of blood flowing to the area.

Blood flow is increased through treatments involving adjustments to the spine and joints, and through spinal decompression. With an adjustment, every joint is manipulated and realigned so that blood can flow naturally to all the connecting tissues, easing the pain of muscle spasms and promoting healing throughout. With a spinal decompression, the pressure placed on the spine, discs and vertebrae is alleviated, having built up thanks to disjointed movements created by the pain. When in pain, the body tends to overcompensate in movement, so it places pressure on the spine in the process, causing even more pain.

The Results

By gently manipulating and stretching the spine, everything, the vertebrae, discs, muscles and nerves are allowed to realign and go back into place, alleviating much of the pain from being disjointed. The spine carries a lot of weight within our bodies, stabilizing our bodies during movement and providing the support it needs when at rest. Once it is allowed to heal, the rest of the body will soon follow, leading to a pain free life through chiropractic treatments.

Chiropractic Care Has Many Benefits

Chiropractic care, an alternative to traditional medicine, has helped thousands of people become pain-free or manage their pain. It may also be one of the best ways to save money and avoid invasive treatment such as surgery or strong drugs. Here are some of the proven ways chiropractic care can help you.

Reducing Pain

You may think of chiropractic care first to relieve problems or pain in your neck and back. But any joint can benefit from chiropractic treatment as well. People suffering from arthritis, even after several years, can get better for life without heavy drugs and surgery. Your chiropractor can provide pain relief for any area of your body.

Lowering spinal pressure has benefits throughout the body. You will experience reduction of pain in the back, knees, feet and legs. It will also reduce muscle spasms and stiffness, so that you can move better. Your range of motion (that is, how far you can move your arms or legs) will increase, and you will have better coordination so that you can effectively perform your activities of daily living. Increased energy is another benefit.

Enhancing Healing

If you have been in an accident or are recovering from a serious illness, chiropractic care may help you experience faster healing. When pressure is relieved throughout, your body begins to heal as it should. Relief sometimes comes very quickly from chiropractic care, with some patients seeing immediate benefits from their first session. Your chiropractic doctor can realign your limbs and joints to give you fast relief.

During your first few chiropractic sessions, it's common to feel slight pain or discomfort. Your body may have been unconditioned or under stress for a long time! Your doctor may be able to tell you when you can expect to feel more comfortable about treatment.

Chiropractics is valuable in treating a variety of conditions and illnesses, and it is also useful as a supplement to traditional medicine to enhance the healing process.

Traditional medicine often requires immediate and drastic treatment with equipment and drugs, and these treatments may cost thousands of dollars. Chiropractic care requires nothing but sessions and therapies, and is a cost-effective path to relief of stiffness and pain in your joints and muscles.
Prices vary in chiropractic treatment, but there is usually no need to charge excessively "up front". Your costs may go down over time as your body requires less treatment, and a long course of treatment may also give you the benefit of lower overall costs.

Many chiropractic professionals accept insurance or payment plans, and those that only accept cash may be willing to give you a discount, especially for continued treatment.

Less Risk

Chiropractic care is not risky. You won't need to worry about painful treatments like surgery or a course of steroid drugs, that leave you incapacitated for weeks or months. With a qualified chiropractic professional, you can be confident that your treatment will be efficient and effective. Depending on your current condition and how you respond to treatment, your course of therapy may last for only a few sessions.

Fibromyalgia and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Fibromyalgia can be very difficult to understand. Fibromyalgia is very hard to understand because of the sheer complexity of how it affects the body system as a whole. It also shares many symptoms with other types of diseases. It can look a lot like chronic fatigue syndrome and, in fact, shares a lot in common with that type of disease. Both of the diseases cause the sufferer to suffer through pain and tiredness. They both seriously hamper the ability of the person to have a productive life at work or at home.

The pain does not confine itself to one area; there can be several areas around the body that feel the pain especially if those body systems include muscles or tendons. The disease also features problems such as pain in the neck, back, and/or knees along with headaches. Just as very patient is different, every patient will have different areas of pain around their bodies.

The nature of the pain and how it spreads itself across the body as a whole makes some people think that there is a more central reason for the pain to exist. The thoughts of why this might happen include hormone and brain regulation processes occurring in the body. Cortisol is often found elevated in many of the patients who are experiencing Fibromyalgia.

It should also be noted that many of these same patients also exhibit problems or pain around areas like the spine. Sprains and strains to this region of the body are very common in these patients as well. It is needless to say that these types of injuries may restrict the types of motion and functions the person was able to engage in before the trauma. The patients may find that they are cannot to return to work or other activities they do in everyday life. Fibromyalgia causes a lack of movement, which, unfortunately, is what a person with Fibromyalgia lacks. The lack of movement or exercise causes the pain to become worse. Bed rest, itself, can be a cause of lower back pain.

Chiropractic care can be helpful in helping the patient regaining their ability to manage the pain and return to a more normal life. Special exercises or movements are used to create balance throughout the body system and especially in areas of the body that may have been injured.

It is important not to forget that diet is very important to the health of a patient as well. Diet can never be ignored when it comes to a plan that deals with the problem in totality. Lack of exercise has robbed many patients of their ability to feel good about themselves. A good diet and exercise can help them regain their self-confidence. However, a good diet also needs to be designed so no hole is left in the nutrient intake equation. It is also true that specific types of foods have certain effects such as increasing inflammation. The inflammation can lead to pain, which is exactly what a Fibromyalgia patient wants to avoid. A good diet for a patient with Fibromyalgia must take into consideration these foods and define ways to avoid them. The basics of good nutrition still need to be adhered to on an ongoing basis. A personal cannot eat more calories than they expend or they will gain weight. The extra weight from these endeavors causes more load bearing stress on the joints which will cause pain in the patient.

The body system is just that, a system of parts that work together. Therefore, a person cannot ignore their emotions when it comes to overall health. Depression can exacerbate physical pain and problems. Things such as depression can hurt the patient's motivation to exercise which can also hurt their ability to maintain a healthy weight that does not give their joints undue stress. Staying positive as much as possible is always a great help when trying to achieve any goal such as losing weight or managing the pain of Fibromyalgia. A doctor and their patient are a team when it comes to managing pain or dealing with a specific problem.

A plan needs to be defined and adhered to in order for the patient to get the results they want. The team, the doctor, and the patient, need to design a program that addresses the physical and psychological factors that affect the patient's health. Only a treatment program that deals with all of the possible problems associated with the problem has a chance of succeeding.
