Chiropractic Care - A Safe and Non-Invasive Way to Reduce Migraines

For people suffering from migraines, a non-invasive and safe way to lessen migraine suffering is Chiropractic care. Not just anyone should use chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is meant for patients who are unable to use prescription medicine because the medicines make them susceptible to other risk factors.

The cause of migraine headaches is still unknown in spite of the major advances in medical science that have been made in the last century. For this reason migraine headaches are said to be idiopathic. There are several theories that have been put forward to explain migraines and their causes. These include genetic malformations, arterial swelling in the cranium and serotin deficiency in the patient.

Another common theory associated with chiropractic theory stipulates that migraine headaches are caused by or in the least contributed to by subluxations in the muscles situated at the base of the skull and the neck. Subluxations can be defined as tense regions in the muscles adjacent to the upper spinal cord small bones. Medical doctors most often than not miss the tension since on an X-ray the bones appear to be in their correct positions. What a chiropractor does is relax the subluxations by manipulating the spine.

Mixed chiropractic and straight chiropractic are the two methods that a chiropractor uses to care for the migraine patients. Only the manipulation of the spinal subluxations and spine are involved when straight chiropractic technique is used. Mixed chiropractic however involves the combination of conventional manipulation and other complementary methods. Mixed chiropractic focuses on reducing the overall neck strain and tension.

A comparison between drug therapies and chiropractic care for chronic tension headaches and migraines was made recently by researchers from Northwestern College of Chiropractic. The college is in Minnesota. The result of the research was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. 218 patients were used in the research. Each patient was either given regular chiropractic care or drug therapy. At the end of the study the two groups each reported a forty to fifty percent drop in the headache pain.

After four weeks (four weeks from when all care was discontinued) a follow up on the patients from both groups was carried out and it revealed that the only patients who still had reduced headaches are the ones belonging to the chiropractic group. As for the drug therapy group, only twenty to twenty five percent of the patients still had the reduced headache pains as a result of the drug therapy administered earlier.

Align Your Body with a Chiropractic Treatment

What is Chiropractics?

Chiropractics is a medical system based on the theory that disease and disorders are caused by misaligned bones, especially in the spine, that obstructs proper nerve functions. Chiropractors manually manipulate the joints of the body and realign the spinal column.

Chiropractors are people who diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. The philosophy of chiropractic medicine believes that skeletal imbalance and joint malfunction, particularly in the area of the spine, can cause pain and other problems. Chiropractors rely on palpitation, pressure, and manual manipulation of the joints and muscles to cure these problems.

Subluxation and chiropractic manipulation

Chiropractors use the term subluxation to depict the altered position of the vertebra and subsequent functional loss, thus determines the location for the manipulative treatment.

Chiropractic kinesiology

Chiropractors often use chiropractic kinesiology to treat structural imbalances and muscle and joint problems. Chiropractic kinesiology is a specific form of diagnosis using functional neurological muscle testing (FNMT) as a primary feedback mechanism to help determine the cause of an individual's chief complaint and to help evaluate our structural, nutritional and mental aspects of health.

Chiropractic treatment is suitable for everyone, including newborn babies, the elderly, pregnant women, and sports enthusiasts. Your chiropractor will help you to maintain your health, and keep your body aligned as it should, and by offering exercise and lifestyle advice for you to follow in the future.

Not all insurance covers chiropractic care. You will need to check with your health care provider. Most chiropractic offices will call and check on your coverage, but it is best to call your health provider prior to your visit.

Chiropractic treatment can be ongoing. You may achieve a degree of comfort after your treatments, but misalignment of joints can sometimes be reoccurring.

Just How Safe is Chiropractic Care For Children (And Adults)?

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children as Well as Adults?

The short answer to this important question is a resounding "Yes!" Children, as well as adults, are successfully - and safely - treated with chiropractic care every single day of the year. Children can safely receive chiropractic adjustments for treatment of almost any type of dysfunction of the spine, back or neck. However, because the bodies of infants, toddlers and young children are different from the bodies of adults, a specialized approach is necessary.

Chiropractic Care for Infants and Toddlers

Infants often experience trauma during the process of being born, and it's important for parents to pay close attention to any neck or spine misalignment that might have occurred. Infants are unable to tell you how they feel or whether they're suffering any pain, so look closely at your baby while he or she is sitting.

If your baby constantly looks in the same direction, it could eventually lead to an irritation. Chiropractic adjustments should be performed to provide relief for your infant. In addition to reducing your baby's discomfort, adjustments will permit an increased range of motion in his or her neck area. The stability of a baby's spine is crucial to healthy, proper development, and chiropractic adjustments are necessary to establish a normal pattern of motion as your infant grows.

Also, I have noticed that children who receive chiropractic care enjoy other long-term health benefits. They seem to be ill less often and suffer less frequently from ear infections.

Chiropractic Care for Children

Older kids usually quite active, and many are involved in sports and other activities which can expose them to back pain or issues with their spine or neck. In addition, some children endure migraine headaches. These can be treated through vertebral adjustments designed to eliminate or reduce the frequency of the migraines and the amount of discomfort they cause. It may have been different in the past, but now, children are frequently treated through chiropractic care.

How to Know When Your Child Needs Chiropractic Treatment: Look at the Symptoms

Spinal problems in children can be difficult to identify unless they reach a crucial stage or have become quite obvious. Nevertheless, early detection is essential to ensure that your child receives the medical care he or she needs to normalize bodily functions and relieve any associated discomfort. The common symptoms listed below can indicate a possible spinal dysfunction in your child:

* misaligned shoulders
* limited mobility of the neck or head
* recurring ear infections
* persistent colds
* abnormal sleeping patterns
* scoliosis
* bedwetting
* constant headaches
* for infants, difficulty breastfeeding

One typical reason parents obtain chiropractic care for their young children is trauma caused by an injury. Whenever a child experiences a physical injury, it can result in a spinal misalignment. Sometimes, the injured child does not feel any immediate pain or discomfort, but the problem is internal and sometimes does not manifest itself for a while.

Is Chiropractic Care Truly Safe?

Chiropractic practitioners use a gentle approach with children. As with adults, chiropractic treatments administered to children can be painless.

A pediatric chiropractor would begin with an evaluation of the child's condition, conducted by asking the parents a series of questions. If the child is old enough, the chiropractor will ask the child if there are any specific complaints or problems.

Children typically respond to chiropractic care much more rapidly than most adults. In fact, most children only require a few treatments to restore normal function in the affected regions of the body.

Chiropractic - Choose a Good Chiropractor the Right Way

Chiropractic massage is a popular and effective treatment for many people, whether you have a sports injury or chronic headaches. Chiropractors can help re-balance the joints, tissue, and alignment of the body to help you function better, have less pain, and improve your overall physical well-being and posture.

Many people who undergo chiropractic massage benefit the most from a continued series of treatments over a long period of time, which means choosing the best chiropractor is important.

When choosing a chiropractor, it is important to take your time and consider many different aspects. When beginning your search, you can ask for recommendations from your primary care physician, friends, and family. You'll be surprised how much information on good and bad chiropractic experiences you can find just by networking with the people close to you.

You can also use the yellow pages and internet if you find you can't gather enough choices from recommendations alone. Once you've narrowed down your options, call a few offices and request more information and a consultation if available. They are often free of charge and give you a chance to assess the experience and beside manner of the chiropractor.

During your consultation or phone interview, ask the chiropractor how long he has been practicing and where his credentials are from. You'll also want to ask many questions about his individual technique. There are many ways one can address a particular problem. Some chiropractors many only use their hands, while others may incorporate tools such as suction devices to aid in the massage.

Ask specifically about your problem and goals and if he has any experiences or patients with similar issues. Some chiropractors may be able to recommend you to a specialist or someone better qualified to address your specific problem. If you feel uncomfortable or not confident with the suggested methods or treatment, move on to another chiropractor.

It is important to find a chiropractor that not only can help you heal, but can accommodate your other needs as well. Is the office nearby enough or will travelling be a problem or cause stress? Are the prices fair? Do you have to book appointments too far in advanced or is there little flexibility in changing dates and times? What are the hours of operation?

You don't want your chiropractic massage to be an experience you dread, but rather one that can help you relax so you get the best results possible. Choose one that has office policies that you believe are fair and can fit with your lifestyle.

After you choose and begin undergoing treatments with a chiropractor, the most important thing is that you should start feeling better. There should be a noticeable difference and improvement in your specific problem within a few weeks or months.

If you feel no difference, or even worse after a month, you may want to have a discussion with your chiropractor about your expectations. You may also consider switching chiropractors.

Chiropractic massage should be a healing, enjoyable experience. By choosing a qualified doctor that makes you feel comfortable will help you get better results and ease any tension you may feel about treatment. Take your time choosing and don't be afraid to ask questions.

7 Key Reasons To Seek Chiropractic Care

Chiropracticis a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Those that use chiropractic care regularly recommend it highly for a variety of reasons. Here are the seven best reasons to find a chiropractor when you aren't feeling your very best.

1. Chiropractic Has Been Proven Safe

Chiropractic is one of the safest therapies available if you are suffering from any neuromusculoskeletal issues such as back, neck, joint, or head pain.

What exactly does safe mean? If you want to talk numbers, then the risk of injury is 1 in 286,000,000, or 0.0002%. Compare that to standard treatments such as medication and surgery where the risk of injury is 1 in 1428. That's right - chiropractic manipulation is that much safer, and as you'll learn later in this report, more effective as well.

The most common issue involving chiropractic isn't an injury at all. It is simply some mild soreness after adjustment. Think about how your muscles feel if you've done something you don't normally do. You feel sore because your muscles, bones, and ligaments have moved in ways they are not used to moving. This is what happens during a chiropractic adjustment but on a minor scale. Any soreness you feel will be gone within 24 hours and most patients feel immediately better with no soreness whatsoever.

Why is chiropractic so safe? There are four main reasons:
  1. Chiropractors have years of schooling with coursework that includes classes on all aspects of the spine.
  2. Chiropractors have been trained, doing clinical work long before becoming licensed.
  3. Chiropractors continue their education long after graduation, completing courses yearly in order to maintain a license to practice.
  4. Finally, and most importantly, a chiropractor's basic philosophy is that the body is capable of healing itself. The purpose of a chiropractor is simply to remove the subluxations, or blockages, that occur in spine so that the body can do its job.
Chiropractic is so safe that agencies unassociated with chiropractic tout its benefits. For instance, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, found that complications are rare. Not only that, they suggest that chiropractic should be used before surgery is considered. And finally, they state that prescription drugs are not recommended for most back pains.

2. Chiropractic Has Been Proven Effective for Pain

If you have pain, chiropractic may be just what you need. Studies in the United States and other parts of the world show that chiropractic manipulations are effective. One study in California found that chiropractic was effective 86% of the time for general lower back pain.

But what of acute lower back pain? A report released by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recommended chiropractic as the best treatment for this ailment. A study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Jefferson County (Missouri) Rehabilitation Centre showed that there was immediate improvement when chiropractic was used to treat acute low back pain.

Study after study has been conducted and study after study has concluded that spinal adjustment is superior to other treatments for acute pain. But chiropractic is beneficial to more than just general, chronic, or acute lower back pain.

Patients of chiropractic seek help for neck pain or discomfort as well. In fact, 19% of patients report neck pain at the first consultation. This pain is usually caused by accident or injury but can also be brought on by every day living.

The modern medical treatment for neck pain is either immobilization or physical therapy. However, studies have shown that spinal adjustments are more effective. For instance, a study done in the Netherlands observed patients receiving one of the three treatments. They found that spinal adjustments improved overall physical functioning more than the other treatments.

Beyond the back and neck, patients often seeks chiropractic care for headaches, including migraines. For chiropractic patients, migraines are often reduced or resolved without using pain killers or other prescription medications. A study was published by chiropractic doctors at University of Odense and the Nordic Institute of Chiropractic and clinical Biochemist in Denmark showing that spinal adjustments and soft tissue therapy allowed for steady improvement.

Many people understand the role of chiropractic in the back, neck, and head because chiropractors are seen as "back doctors." However, chiropractic has proven effective for many other conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, infantile colic, and much more.

For pain associated with a variety of conditions, chiropractic is proven effective, often more effective than modern medical treatments. Coupled with the safety of chiropractic, it should be your first choice when dealing with pain.

3. Chiropractic is Less Invasive and Drug Free

If you go to a medical doctor due to neck and back pain, you are likely to be given nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDS. Although these drugs are given out regularly, they do have significant risks t hat are far greater than the typical issue, soreness, seen with chiropractic.
NSAID risks include:
  • Allergic reactions, some of which can be life threatening
  • Hives or rashes
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Gastrointestinal issues such as bleeding or ulcers
  • Cancer
Another typical treatment is bed rest. But this, too, can cause problems such as muscles atrophy, heart and lung weakness, bone loss, and blood clots.

Let's not forget surgery. Surgery is used for neck and back pain whenever painkillers and bed rest don't work and the risks of surgery are great. They include:
  • Breathing issues due to anesthesia - a patient can quit breathing entirely
  • Blood loss leading to transfusions
  • Cardiovascular risks such as heart attack or stroke
  • Scar tissue
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Lung collapse
  • Injury to other areas of the body
  • Paralysis
  • Numbness and tingling of parts of the body
  • Swelling and bruising
  • And even death
Chiropractic has none of these risks because it is not invasive. There is no cutting on the body and there is no medication prescribed. To avoid the risks associated with NSAIDS and surgery, chiropractic is an excellent choice.

4. Chiropractic is Less Disruptive to Your Lifestyle

Chiropractic is done on an outpatient basis and has easy recovery, often less than 24 hours of minimal soreness. Consider this in comparison to the recovery of surgery.

After any surgical procedure, the body needs time to repair tissues damaged during the surgery so that the body can return to normal. Surgical recovery is a process that can take time, often long periods of time requiring medication and bed rest. In fact, pushing yourself too hard after surgery will cause setbacks and make your recovery time longer.

Chiropractic, on the other hand, has limited recovery time. At most, chiropractic patients may feel some mild soreness in the area of the manipulation. This soreness is typically gone in a matter of hours, not days or weeks as with surgery.

Additionally, surgical patients that are older, out of shape, overweight, or generally in poor health will take far longer to heal and be ready for every day life. Although different factors will dictate how quickly you are pain free, the ability to resume your lifestyle happens quickly with most patients, often with as little as one manipulation.

5. Chiropractic is Less Expensive

In August 1999, Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) of Kansas presented a study titled "Lumbago Treatment." When viewed per treatment episode, chiropractic was shown to be more cost effective than anesthesiology, neurosurgery, neurology, registered physical therapy, orthopedic reconstructive surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and rheumatology.

Why so cost effective? Medical doctors and physical therapists rely on:
  • Referrals
  • Prescriptions
  • Surgery
  • MRIs
  • CT scans
  • Hospitalization
Over 50% of the charges are simply for diagnostic procedures and not for actual pain relief.
On the other hand, the majority of chiropractic expense comes from office based treatment with less than 10% of costs arising from diagnostics, typically in the form of spinal x-rays.

A study in the May 2007 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed that chiropractic resulted in a 60.2% reduction in hospital admissions, 59.0% reduction in hospital days, 62.0% reduction in outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 83% reduction pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine.

By reducing these items, overall costs associated with chiropractic care are significantly less than that of traditional medical care.

6. Chiropractic Helps With Injuries Due to Accidents

Chiropractic is beneficial in treating various injuries such as sprains, pulled muscles, and joint problems due to auto, sports, work, and everyday injuries. The most common injuries due to accidents are:
  • Whiplash
  • Lower back misalignment
  • Upper back and neck misalignment
  • Repetitive motion injuries
Whiplash is the sudden movement that causes distortions to the neck. This type of sudden movement often happens during a car crash, even one at very low speeds. Although you may not initially feel any pain, the vertebrae that move out of place will eventually cause problems with the nerves and cause you pain from misalignment or subluxations. Medical doctors prescribe pain meds and bed rest for whiplash, which may be good for a day or two, but not for the long run. There is no way to remain in bed indefinitely nor is it possible to function regularly on pain medications. A chiropractor will help you with the cause of the problem rather than help you manage the symptoms.

Lower back misalignment can happen suddenly or over a long period of time. For instance, you can improperly lift something heavy resulting in immediate back pain, or you can simply have poor posture that results in back pain over time. The misalignment causes subluxations that can be corrected using chiropractic.

Lower back pain is made up of several different low back problems including:
  • Vertebral subluxations
  • Injured discs
  • Muscle strain
  • Ligament sprain
  • Scoliosis
  • Sciatica
  • And more.
The ability to correct injuries holds true for the upper back and neck as well.
Repetitive Motion Injuries are a fast growing source of pain in the United States often associated with the workplace, particularly sitting at a computer terminal for long periods of time. Repetitive motion injuries cause less oxygen to get into the muscles and this causes scar tissue to develop. Chiropractic releases the subluxations causing the pain.

So, whether your pain is from a car accident or merely sitting incorrectly at work, chiropractic is a way for you to feel better fast.

7. Chiropractic: Because You Live, Move, and Breathe

Because you are alive and move about, you are sure to cause a misalignment of your spine at one time or another. Simple movements such as sitting or bending can cause problems. So can walking, running, stretching, and lifting. In fact, any movement can create a subluxation and subluxations cause pain when left alone. So, if you move, then you can benefit from chiropractic.

Whether you are out running every day or see yourself more as a couch potato, chiropractic can be beneficial to you. It is the most effective natural healthcare available. And, as you've learned, it is safe, effective, non-invasive, inexpensive, and great for any injuries you may have. If you live, move, or breathe, you should have a doctor of Chiropractic as a member of your personal health care team.

Understanding Chiropractic Care Through Frequently Asked Questions

Millions of people turn to chiropractors each year for alleviation of pain and other health related problems. Even though the field of chiropractic care has been around for more than a century, there are many people who have never been to a chiropractor or do not understand what a chiropractor can do for them.

Here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions on the subject:

What is chiropractic care?

The chiropractic field was founded on the idea that manipulations of the spine can cure and prevent many aches, pains, and disorders. Chiropractors find joint and vertebrae that are out of place or "subluxated" and adjust the spine so that everything is once again in its proper alignment.

Is it safe to be adjusted by a chiropractor?

The good news is that yes, it is safe to be adjusted by a chiropractor. This field has prided itself on using natural and alternative health treatments, especially those that are noninvasive and do not involve medications. It is also interesting to note that chiropractors pay only a fraction of what medical doctors pay for malpractice insurance.

Is the method of adjustment the same for all patients?

No. The doctor will typically take some x-rays of the spine to look for displaced vertebrae in the spine as well as several other possible spinal issues. Taking the results of the x-rays and the symptoms described by the patient, the doctor will tailor the treatment plan to the needs of each individual case.

There are even unique treatment plans for children. Those in the chiropractic field believe that birth can be a major cause for spinal trauma in infants, warranting a quick check. Older children can also benefit from spinal manipulations when they are complaining of a myriad of other health concerns.

Is chiropractic care safe for pregnancy?

It is generally considered safe for pregnant women. Lower back pain is a very common complaint for expectant mothers regular chiropractic care can help ease that pain and even put the body into a better position for labor. Pregnant women should get permission from their physicians before trying any new treatments or adjustments.

Can back surgery patients benefit from chiropractic care?

Yes, and in fact, regular spinal manipulations after back surgery can help avoid future back surgeries. As it is today, almost 50 percent of back surgery patients who do not undergo any other treatments will experience a repeat of former pain and symptoms in the following years, requiring more surgery. Chiropractic care can reduce this possibility and may even help people with back pain to find relief without any surgery at all.

Can chiropractic care cure all health problems?

No. Not all health conditions are directly related to the spine and its alignment, like cancer and diabetes for example. Yet chiropractic care can be surprisingly effective for so much more than just back pain.

It can reduce and cure many conditions associated with the nerve system function such as neck and back pain, headaches, stress reduction and conditions such as sciatica. If you, or your family, suffer from any of these conditions, its time you tried out this alternative medical therapy.

Good Health Without Drugs Or Surgery - The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care Offers Many Benefits

Chiropractic care is becoming increasingly popular. One significant reason is the wide array of benefits that chiropractic care can provide. Many people also recommend chiropractic treatment due to its non-invasive nature and its insistence of awakening the body's own natural ability to heal.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Anyone can develop a musculoskeletal dysfunction. Because any movement within the traumatized area can cause pain and discomfort, these dysfunctions can impair a person's motor capacity and prevent him or her from physically performing optimally. Fortunately, essentially everyone suffering discomfort due to a misaligned spine, back or neck can be helped by the healing abilities of chiropractic care.

No matter what initially caused your discomfort, our natural approach to care can help you by:

* reducing or eliminating lactic acid accumulations in your muscles
* improving your circulation
* facilitating the travel of oxygen and nutrients throughout your body
* increasing your flexibility
* eliminating soreness and pain
* speeding your recovery time
* reducing muscle spasms
* preventing future injuries
* increasing your sense of relaxation
Combine Chiropractic Care with Natural Techniques

The most effective way to enhance the benefits of care is to combine that treatment with natural techniques. Even chiropractors recommend the incorporation of natural methods because they help your body adjust to the chiropractic treatment you receive. Relieving pressure and sources of discomfort will allow your body to achieve maximum mobility and improved physical performance.

To improve the results of your care, try to develop a routine that includes the following:

* properly hydrating your body by drinking plenty of liquids
* following a healthy exercise routine with stretching exercises
* following a healthy nutritional plan

Additional Benefits of Care

Some people harbor misconceptions about chiropractic care, including the belief that is it only appropriate for mild back pain, headaches and the like. Some even believe that chiropractic is not a valid form of treatment for anything. However, the benefits of chiropractic adjustments extend to people who suffer from extreme spinal misalignments, as well as other conditions which are unrelated to musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Results may vary, but chiropractic care can help in a variety of situations:

* pregnant women may experience easier deliveries
* infants may experience improved developmental abilities and avoid developing scoliosis
* children may have an increased ability to avoid ear infections, asthma and bed wetting
* adults may feel more energetic and productive
* seniors may attain better balance and avoid injuries caused by falling

After receiving chiropractic care, individuals report experiencing the following benefits:

* improved functioning of the nervous and immune systems
* improved vitality
* improved respiration
* improved digestion
* improved vision
* improved overall health

When do the Benefits of Your Care Become Apparent?

After you receive chiropractic treatment, your body will begin to realign itself. The pressure that is causing pain in your joints will be relieved. Patients with minor issues will experience relief soon after their chiropractic treatments. Compared to surgical procedures, which frequently involve a lengthy recovery period, the results of chiropractic care will become evident fairly quickly.

Some patients might experience a slight soreness or aching following care. This slight discomfort is caused by your body's need to adjust to the chiropractic realignment after being misaligned for a period prior to the treatment. Your body should make this adjustment fairly quickly, after which you will regain your normal mobility.
