Chiropractic For Children's Ear Infections

It is not uncommon for young children to have ear infections. They can be very painful for a child. Parents struggle to know what to do for the child as the child screams out in pain. Otitis media is the most common ear infection that affects young children. They are one of the most common reasons parents bring their child to the pediatrician. In fact, they account for more than a third of the visits. Ear pain, fever and irritability are the common symptoms associated with an ear infection.

The source of ear infections is either viral or bacterial. They are also often associated with another sickness like a cold. Ear infections become chronic for some children. Other complications such as hearing damage and other associated problems can occur if chronic infections are not treated.
The traditional method of dealing with ear infections is with antibiotics. Antibiotics may help if the cause of the infection is bacterial, but if it is viral the antibiotics are useless. If antibiotics are used too often, drug-resistant bacteria may develop. The drugs no longer work against the bacteria, leaving the child in pain. Antibiotics also destroy healthy flora or bacteria that should exist in the digestive tract. This may lead to digestive problems.

For some children, chronic ear infections can lead to fluid buildup in the ear. If the fluids are not cleared after several months, the child's hearing may become affected. Doctors often prescribe ear tubes to help clear the fluid. This is a procedure that involves making an incision in the eardrum and a tube is placed inside the hole created. This prevents pressure buildup and helps drain the fluid. This procedure is often effective, but must be repeated in twenty to thirty percent of the cases. General anesthesia is also required which can be dangerous for the child.

As an alternative method to antibiotics and invasive surgery, more and more people are trying chiropractic first to help their children with the ear problems. Research has proven chiropractic adjustments effective in helping children with ear infections. Chiropractic adjustments can help to mobilize the drainage in the ear which helps to prevent fluid buildup.

Chiropractors are trained to locate misaligned spinal bones and correct them with specific hands on adjustments. Specific adjustments to the upper cervical bones of the spine and occiput have proven to be the most effective. Chiropractic treatments are safe for children and a more gentle approach is used.
